Johannesburg - Murray & Roberts, the company responsible for the construction of the Sandton pedestrian bridge that collapsed on Thursday, said it could still not provide solid answers.

"At this point, we are unable to comment on how long the investigations will take and when they will conclude and appeal to the public to await the outcome. We are as concerned as everyone to understand what happened and commit to sharing information as soon as the investigation is complete," company spokesperson Ed Jardim said.

The support structure of the bridge, which runs along the M1 across Grayston Drive, collapsed on Wednesday afternoon shortly before the afternoon rush.

At least two people were killed and another 20 were injured when vehicles making their way past the bridge were crushed. Murray & Roberts confirmed it had appointed technical, engineering, legal and forensic specialists to probe the incident.

"This is in addition to other investigations that have been initiated by the Department of Labour, the City of Johannesburg, the [South African Police Service] and other parties with which Murray & Roberts is closely cooperating," Jardim said.

The company warned against speculation over what caused the structure to collapse.

The road was expected to be reopened for peak traffic.
