Muti made strikers aggressive - miner

2012-08-21 09:24

Johannesburg - Protesting Lonmin mine workers in Marikana, Rustenburg, grew so aggressive after they took muti from a renowned traditional healer that they believed the muti had made them invincible, it was reported on Tuesday.

“After they got the muti people were so aggressive. They just wanted to fight. They felt so invincible,” Lonmin miner Bulelani Malawana told the Daily Dispatch.

“I was offered it for R1 000. I turned it down as I didn’t believe in it,” he said.

Two miners who survived the shooting last week Thursday, said they were made to believe that if they used muti by a traditional healer known as Nzabe in the Eastern Cape, bullets fired by police would not harm them.

Malawana said he refused to take the muti as he did not believe in it.

Another mineworker said their leaders had approached them on Thursday and warned them to leave or they would be killed.

Nothi Zimanga said miners drank brown muti to strengthen them ahead of their confrontation with police.

“They were cut several times on their upper body and a black substance was smeared on the wounds."

He said they were told that when they confronted the police they should not look back and should instead just charge forward.

They were told if they looked back, the muti would not work.

The confrontation left 34 miners dead and 78 injured.
Another 260 were arrested.

The nyanga who reportedly dispensed the muti was popular in Mbizane in the Eastern Cape.

  • mofstok - 2012-08-21 09:30

Well, that didn't work out for you as planned now did it? Next time protest peacefully and you will have no need of "invincibility" muti.

      kala.bafazi - 2012-08-21 10:05

One of the muthi's side effects is death.

      spartanx93 - 2012-08-21 10:14

They should ask for a refund!

      boltonbarry - 2012-08-21 10:30

Indeed Kala. I wonder of they read the fine print on the label?

      evan.connock - 2012-08-21 10:36

@spartanx93. Indeed a refund would be ideal, only Mr Sangoma built this little fail safe into his scheme.... The muti does not work, not unlike failing your first skydive jump, or being a suicide bomber, there are no second chances. Naturally Mr Sangoma will insist that of the 30 odd that danced in the path of gunfire, none had used his product.

At R1 000 a shot there is one happy sangoma with a hefty amount of cash is his pockets. Hell even the GPs don't make that much cash in one day.

      peterdonb - 2012-08-21 12:53

Now spare a though for the police's Riot Units. The use of 'muti' in demonstrations, etc is not something new. That is something they had to deal with throughout the years of policing and will have to deal with it for years to come. Whether you believe in 'muti' or not, they do, and that is the danger. They truly believe it works and that makes them so pliable in the hands of the wrong leaders that are hell-bent on proving a point or carving a political career. Whether you like it or not, this is AFRICA. With its own diversity and beliefs. To police in such a society requires a skill set that you just cannot copy out of an American Police Training Manual or the United Nations Criminal Right's Manual or even the French Anti-Riot manual (which I believe is the flavour of the month in riot police training - something called French Techniques or such). Whether you want to accept is or not, you ain't seen nothing yet until you've stepped in the shoes of a policeman faced with these scenarios fuelled with liquor, drugs, and 'muti'. So, next time you blame a policeman for not acting exactly like the picture poster for Policing in a Westernised Society, think again. It is not necessarily the reality he or she face daily. Given the same circumstances and reality, and some practical experience in this regard, I will not have hesitated to give the order to shoot at Marikana. There can be now doubt that the police at Marikana were fighting for their survival and had to other choice!

      sam.lloyd.104 - 2012-08-21 12:53

Well if a shower after sex prevents the President from getting aids why can't muti stop bullets??

In the light of the fact that our government officially recognises or wants to officially recognise sangomas as sources of alternative medicine, paid for by medical aids, is it not reasonable that this sangoma or traditional healer that the now dead miners consulted could be sued for malpractice? The families of the deceased should look into this. I cannot see from the videos that the guys in front looked back, only forward, to their deaths. The guys that ran away at the back seemed to survive. Sue the man.

      michael.vanrheenen.9 - 2012-08-21 13:08

      LOL @ raymon.mcnelly

      JohanCduToit - 2012-08-21 13:31

Jeremy, a sangoma that says muti can stop bullets, vs a religious leader that says prayer can heal illness or provide life after death - what is the difference? The only difference I see is that the sangoma was stupid enough to promise something that can be tested. If he was clever he would have said something like: "take this muti and you will be less likely to die, and if you do, you will live forever in heaven". These sangomas still have a lot to learn from other religions.

      johandebeer - 2012-08-21 14:00

Du Toit, are you trying to convert people to atheism? Sure, the muti thing and sangomas are stupid, but now you bring true religion into this? You are acting like the swines to which the Bible refers. You are annoying everyone, so please... Don't expect any further reaction from my side to your tirade

      JohanCduToit - 2012-08-21 14:15

The "true religion". Johan, do you realise that the only reason you think that Christianity is "true" is because you were indoctrinated with it when you were only a small child. And now that you are an adult you still just blindly accept it as fact. Think about it. If you were born to Muslim parents, lived in a Muslim country, and were indoctrinated with Muslin beliefs as a child, would you still have told me today that Christianity is the one "true religion"? The truth is that religion is a lie. A fairy tale. I am sorry.

      jeremy002 - 2012-08-21 16:23

@JCduToit - I was really only looking at it from the professional healer point of view, half tongue-in-cheek. Eish, lighten up man. You should try to get a chip for your other shoulder as well so that you can have a more balanced point of view.

      JohanCduToit - 2012-08-21 16:41

Jeremy, there really is no need for personal attacks. I just find it very hypocritical that people almost universally condemn this sangoma and those who took advice from him, but then they happily go to church on Sunday believing the same kind of supernatural nonsense.

      marcusvandermerwe - 2012-08-21 21:25

@JohanCduToit - Your argument is true, i agree. But please, do you see Christians running infront of an oncoming train to test their fate? The issue is not religion, it's about common sense.

Straight from the horse's mouth for all those who said they were running from the teargas, they didn't deserve to be shot, etc. This guy confirms the video footage- the miners stormed the police to fight them. Thus they deserved what they got. I feel so sorry for the children and wives who are now left with to do the cleaning up, these guys should really have thought of their family before they decided to get so violent (and they were violent before the muti as they weapons from day one).

Sorry for those that lost their lives in all of this, again I repeat the traditional healer should be found and arrested. Charging these miners R1000, this so called deceptive healer made a killing in one day out of the miners. As someone commented earlier, find this "healer" and let him/her drink the same concoction and let them stand before a firing squad and see if they will survive. If you were a policeman what would you have done, aim for the ones with guns in a crowd is that possible?my opinion is miners went to war and unfortunately they lost it. it could have been ''20 policeman were shot, slaughted to death by miners others fighting for their lives in hospitals.and these policemen also have families they responsible for,so please this is sad yes but people need to learn to respect their lives!! Police have my full support on this.

      irma.white.9 - 2012-08-21 12:30

If that was the case they would have dropped their weapons and run with their hands in the air.

      galmzala - 2012-08-21 12:52

Zwelithini, who carry a weapon to negotiate for salary increase hello, they killed 10 people before thursday, remember the saying that says if you kill with gun, you will die the same way, maybe I should say it in Zulu (uma ubulala ngenkempa uyofa ngenkempa), those guys were heartless, they spend they are hard earn cash to pay inyanga to get umuthi to be invissible why they didnt ask inyanga to get umuthi to get paid more money, and police ask them to put down weapons since monday and they are union president worn them but they decided otherwise.

Unemployed, locked-up with a family fending for themselves without an income. So how did that work out for you so far? But I guess they didn't think of that. Isn't that the problem, we fail to think? If only, once in your existence try to think. It is something that doesn't come naturally but at least try. It usually improves with repetition.

  • stampalex - 2012-08-21 09:57

2012 and they still believe in this cr*p... Oh everyone says, but it's their culture. Rubbish. They and the f*&king Vietnamese should get together and form a We're-So-Incredibly-Dumb therapy group where they can drink Rhino Horn soup and Sangoma Bushroot juice, taking turns to check whether their hard-on's are better or if they're actually bulletproof. Last man standing is the wanker.

  • anelle.booysen - 2012-08-21 09:58

Yeah, and the Chinese believe Rhino horn makes you popular under the ladies...

  • willie.wessels.90 - 2012-08-21 09:58

did he pay income tax on the money recieved for the muti??

  • derek.wright.7370 - 2012-08-21 10:00

Arrest the traditional healers and charge them with inciting violence and man-slaughter or possibly even murder, if that charge will stick

  • josie.puchertmackenzie - 2012-08-21 10:00

one can't believe that in the 21st century, people still believe in these ancient fairy tales about invincible muti. So how did that muti work for 38 of the people who are now dead?

  • brenda.verhave - 2012-08-21 10:01

This sounds like an Asterix comic.....

  • hendrik.v.heerden - 2012-08-21 10:01

How in this time and age can people still believe that Muti will stop bullets. It is ludicrous to say the least. And to think that the Sangoma who gave them the Muti believes his dribble as well. The Sangoma should be charged for Murder as he made them believe such crap. These people get to vote in a Democratic election?????

  • klipkop.degroote - 2012-08-21 10:02

Probably human body parts in that muti. Guess they never heard of Red Bull.

  • chris.mostert.92 - 2012-08-21 10:04

This "traditional healer" must be charged with incitement to violence- his actions attributed to the deaths!

  • Sedeshan Naidoo - 2012-08-21 10:04

we should force the healer to drink the muti and walk head-on into a pride of lions...

  • Singatha - 2012-08-21 10:04

DAMN!!! Always a disclaimer.... "They were told if they looked back, the muti would not work.".Guess no money back guarantee for the fallen ones, cause from the footage they were looking straight at the cops(Guess it would be difficult to look back and charge forward at the same time).

  • jannie.l.kotze - 2012-08-21 10:05

So basically that witchdocter made thousands off this... ai weet jy!

      sean.redmond3 - 2012-08-21 10:27

      derek.smith.12177276 - 2012-08-21 10:36

it was paid upfront...while the killing was taking place the muti man was seen in Clicks pharmacy in Rustenburg buying Immodiums...

  • jurgen.eksteen - 2012-08-21 10:06

    Cops 2 - Miners 0

      jurgen.eksteen - 2012-08-21 10:09

Based on these statements, I guess the police are exonerated for shooting in self defense.

  • Tony - 2012-08-21 10:06

They all fell off the stupid tree and hit the sangoma on the way down!
