Johannesburg - A murder is being investigated after a woman's mutilated body was found at a school in Umlazi, Durban, at the weekend, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Monday.

The 29-year-old woman had been stabbed several times and her stomach had been cut open, said Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Mdunge. Her body was found around 20:00 on Saturday.

Police were awaiting a post-mortem report, which would also clarify whether she had been raped.

The motive for the murder was not yet known and no arrests had been made by 15:00 on Monday.

Mdunge said there were few blood stains in the area where the body was found. This indicated that the woman's body may have been dumped at the school after she was killed.

KwaZulu-Natal Community Safety MEC Willies Mchunu condemned the murder, his office said in a statement.

Mchunu had assigned a community safety department team to work with police and the community to help reduce crimes against women in the area.

On Monday morning, KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo visited the local police and the woman's family on Mchunu's behalf.

"The brutality shown here is a clear indication that criminals are merciless and do not value human life," he said.

Dhlomo said he was confident that the woman's killers would soon be arrested.
