Durban - Mystery still surrounds the discovery of over R3 million in counterfeit cash and fake cocaine in a rental car.

The stash was found in the boot of a vehicle that had been picked up at the King Shaka International Airport’s car rental section by a Verulam panel beater to undergo a polish on Friday.

But when they opened the boot they found two duffle bags stuffed with cash and fake drugs.

Prem Balram, owner of private security firm Reaction Unit, said the R100 and R200 notes felt real.

“We were called to the scene by the panel shop. On close inspection one could see the money was fake with no watermark and we eventually ascertained the cocaine was not real either.”

He said once they alerted the police, the fake money was counted in front of the officers, totalling R3 265 000.

“There appears to be no reasonable explanation for such a large amount of money in the car. Either the owner forgot about it before boarding or left it behind on purpose fearing they would be picked up by the airport security,” said Balram.

The powdery substance weighed 4.8kg. Balram said that all of the recovered items were handed to the SA Police Service.

Police are investigating.
