Pietermaritzburg - A Howick mother is still in the dark as to the circumstances of her daughter’s death after her body was found naked in a culvert on Saturday.

Police are trying to establish the cause of the woman’s death.

Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Gay Ebrahim said Howick police were alerted to the body in a culvert on Hayfields Road at about 10 am on Saturday.

The woman was identified as Siyaphumelela Thandekile Leona Gwamanda (33), an aspiring fashion designer and former Howick High pupil. Her body was found less than a kilometre away from her home in Hyslop Road.

Gwamanda’s mother, Duduzile, said she last saw her daughter on Thursday last week.

She said Gwamanda had asked her for R200 to buy material for a dress before leaving for work.

It is believed Gwamanda went to work that day, but took Friday off. She never returned home.

Duduzile described her daughter as a kind, friendly and generous person. “She designed the dress I am wearing now. We still do not know what happened to her. It is very hard.”

Ebrahim said it is suspected that Gwamanda committed suicide, but the case was still being investigated
