N3 re-opens but warnings remain

Johannesburg - The N3 between Johannesburg and Durban has been re-opened with restricted lane usage in places, the N3 Toll Concession said on Wednesday.

Motorists should however postpone travelling on the route to Thursday, commercial manager Con Roux said in a statement.

"Icy conditions can be expected, which could make travel extremely dangerous. Motorists and drivers should avoid travelling at night and in the early hours of the morning as this is typically when ice build-up occurs on the road surface."

Snow fell heavily in the Warden, Harrismith and Van Reenen's Pass areas, reaching depths in excess of 1m in places.

As a result, many motorists and trucker drivers had been stranded along the N3 since Monday.

"Our priority was to deal with the humanitarian needs of those stranded; to remove the snow and obstacles from the road and then to clear the road so that vehicles could travel safely through Van Reenen's Pass, in particular," he said.

He called on motorists to take blankets, water and food in the event that the extreme weather recurred.

Eish, this is "snow" joke. Never seen such a white South Africa. As Mr Dylan says, "The times they are a-changing"

A big thank you to all those who came to the rescue and to those whose courtessy and decency made this time much easier. A rap on the knuckles for those selfish and inconsiderate truckers and motorists who took dangerous risks to speed, to unsafely overtake, and who ignored the plight of others.
