Johannesburg - The neighbour of a Benoni man who burnt to death in his bedroom has described hearing two loud explosions before seeing flames reaching as high as the trees in the garden.

Netwerk24's Claudi Mailovich reported that Tyronne du Plessis went out at 05:00 on Wednesday morning to see his neighbour Philip Snyman's house on fire.

He called emergency services and the fire brigade, unaware that his neighbour was trapped inside the bedroom.

According to the report, Snyman was alone at home at the time. He was married with three children, and the family had only lived at the house for a few months.

"When... paramedics as well as firefighters arrived on scene, they found a room engulfed in flames," ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said.

"Firefighters extinguished the blaze. Upon inspection, the body of a man believed to be in his 30s was found."

Du Plessis said it was a situation one cannot describe unless you've experienced it, and he felt quite desperate.

Snyman's mother paid tribute to him on his Facebook page, saying she could not believe he was no longer with them.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, and is being investigated.
