Nelson Mandela discharged from hospital

2013-04-06 14:48

Johannesburg - Former president Nelson Mandela has been discharged after spending nine days in hospital, the presidency said on Saturday.

"Former president Nelson Mandela has been discharged from hospital today, April 6, following a sustained and gradual improvement in his general condition," spokesperson Mac Maharaj said.

"The former president will now receive home based high care."

Maharaj said President Jacob Zuma extended his gratitude to all South Africans and people around the world for their support.

"President Zuma thanks the hard working medical team and hospital staff for looking after Madiba so efficiently," he said.

Mandela was admitted to hospital on 27 March with pneumonia.

Since then the 94-year-old former statesman has had fluid drained from his lungs to ease his breathing.

Mandela has fought back from lung ailments before.

According to the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis in 1988, after he had been transferred out of Robben Island to Pollsmoor Prison.

His most recent treatments for lung ailments included a hospital stay in December last year.

      Bob Wowzer - 2013-04-06 15:53

He's been fighting? Luckily a human vegetable can't find the energy to construct explosives, otherwise we might have had a problem on our hands again...

  • erich.vonstalhein.14 - 2013-04-06 15:01

Nelson is discharged, Zuma is just a discharge.

      Mfaniseni Thusi - 2013-04-06 16:08

      Was it necessary?

      Riaan Mostert - 2013-04-06 17:54

LOL. Even a discharge has its purpose.

Tlali Wow, your life must be quite empty and worthless if you measure your existence and self worth by other people's perceptions and actions. And remove log from your own eye before you see the splint in another's.

Why Tlali, just how does him living affect racists or anyone but his family anyway? He plays no role in politics anymore and one day he will, like all of us, die.

It's a great day for sensible folks because now we don't need to listen to this crap anymore... well until he's in hospital again. Apparently Father Time hadn't beaten Mandela up as much as we thought he did.

DAVE MBEVA, IS THIS WHAT YOUR FREEDOM FIGHTER, MADIBA TOUGHT YOU RACIST BLACKS? I DON'T THINK THE NIGHT OF THE LONG KNIVES IS IN HIS VOCABULARY. Need I remind you, we beat the British, we beat the Zulu's, we beat the Cubans, we beat the terrorist ANC's. Be assured little racist man we will beat you too.

      Frauzy - 2013-04-06 19:17

  • Fredrich Pieter de Wet - 2013-04-06 19:07

NEWS 24 is causing apartheid and harm to this country by allowing racist remarks and comments, like DAVE MBEVA with the night of the long knives. I think they need to start reading the comments on their own stories. The editor should wake up.

      Mlungisi Botha - 2013-04-06 20:48

Fully agree with you Fredrich. I've complained too many times about some of the stuff that's aired in these columns. It inflames passions. I'm not saying limit speech but our constitution allows free speech unless its deliberately meant to hurt other people. It's not only coming from the likes of Mbeva by the way, if the surnames are anything to go by (give or take a nom de plume here and there) the racism comes from all corners of our country. The thing to do though is not to encourage it by responding in a racist fashion too. I try not to, despite feeling provoked on many occasions. Some of these people are just stoking the flames to see what the reaction is likely to be and would not have the b***ls to stand up in public and say what they're writing. Another thing is that some of them may well be sitting as far away as Alaska near the North Pole - that makes them feel very empowered and untouchable. If people were asked to put home addresses and phone numbers you'd see a marked change.
