New Age hits back at City Press report

2013-02-11 08:35

Johannesburg - The New Age CEO Nazeem Howa hit back on Monday morning at a weekend newspaper report that the state-owned Telkom was its top advertiser.

“It’s similar to the patronising and racist mindset of some of opposition politicians who imply that the senior executives like Pinky Moholi at Telkom, Brian Molefe at Transnet, Brian Dames at Eskom and others who run parastatals don’t know what they are doing and do not apply their minds when they spend their budgets," Howa was quoted as saying.

“By implication, City Press is saying these CEOs and their management teams are incompetent and corrupt.

"In my view, City Press’s story is part of an ongoing and sustained narrative that says since black people (read the ANC) have taken over the running of our government, major corporations and parastatals, those involved are inherently corrupt,” Howa said in a report in The New Age.

He was responding to a report in the City Press on Sunday that Telkom invested R34m in advertising in The New Age newspaper from December 2011 to November 2012.

The most recent Nielsen Adex report revealed that Telkom, which is 40% owned by the government, was the top advertiser in The New Age during the period, according to the City Press.

It was responsible for a third of the newspaper's advertising revenue.

It was previously reported that Telkom sponsored 12 business breakfasts for The New Age to the tune of R12m in the 2012/13 financial year, according to the newspaper.

Here's a question Mr. Nazeem Howa?? Honestly speaking.... Would your publication be profitable or even exist with out the support of Government, and the three main parastatals you mention?? Just a question??

      hell.hound.1614 - 2013-02-11 09:00

@lindani - Just a quick question. Have you read the CEO denying the allegations of corruption in this article? No. What he did is what most south Africans like to do, and that is play the race card to get out of jail…….

      EddyDeepfield - 2013-02-11 09:27

“By implication, City Press is saying these CEOs and their management teams are incompetent and corrupt. ... We know that the new power station ESKOM is building is 500% over budget. It is costing the tax payer 250 Billion paid up front. A similar one built in India was finished in less time and cost 25% of ESKOM station and it is being paid for over 30 years. Yes Brian Dames and the entire ESKOM board are incompetent and flush with corruption. The ANC as a party are making billions from the stations as well.

      adrien.mcguire - 2013-02-11 09:49

@ lindani, Expectations are that government money is spent wisely. No media planner, responsible for that sort of budget , would invest that much money in a minor publication. It is just a waste. So therefore suspicions are raised. It has got nothing to do with being black or white....... please dont show your racist hand !

      derek.francois.3 - 2013-02-11 10:16

Time to sink this government sponsored excuse for a newspaper, now they want a 24hr news service which no doubt will be funded by taxpayers to spread ANC propaganda..............................

      charlesbronson.bronson - 2013-02-11 10:38

Why giving New Age so much attention, they are a dictator newspaper full of corrupted ANC and corrupted tax thief JZ news only. I do not even read it when they give it out for free!!

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2013-02-11 10:49

      Lindani.zulu1654. Whites bother you much?.

      PointBlank - 2013-02-11 11:39

      Oh, look, the race card....

      talana.malherbe - 2013-02-11 12:17

Abdulbaith, who the h@ll do you think you are to make such a comment? Go back to where you came from and see how acceptable you are as a gay person. We are not like you, we don't discriminate against people because of their colour or culture or preferences. We critisize people on their actions and words and yours speak of extremely low character.

  • Erna - 2013-02-11 08:54

According to Carte Blanche last night, Brian Dames of Escom, and his colleagues, don't know what they are doing, but are earning huge fat salaries!

  • gert_swart - 2013-02-11 08:59

***"black people (read the ANC)"*** This is the most serious problem in South Africa. The ANC is seen as black and therefor any critsism against the ANC must be racist. According to the ANC's Freedom Charter, it is supposed to be non-racial but instead, it has become a racist party - no different than the previous NP. What a shame. Many of us put our hopes on the ANC to unite and build our country.

      Luyanda - 2013-02-11 09:06

Se DIT WEER OU GERT!!! Swartes word ook onderdruk deur dieselfde ANC,ek insluitend. So was Steve Biko en Robert Sobukwe! Net REG vir gatkruipers....

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2013-02-11 10:55

Gert Swart, Yes many of us believed that non-racial Freedom Charter, A pity it has been fed to the pigs.

eish Gert - well said *you left me speechless*

  • womba.wonder - 2013-02-11 09:03

Nazeem -- the numbers never lie.

  • kyro.stephens - 2013-02-11 09:04

Isn't a R34 million budget for a year of advertising a bit excessive?! Especially in a paper I haven't seen anywhere before. That's just in one paper too! How much is Telkom spending on advertising elsewhere? It just reeks of corruption. Please shed some light on this budget if you can reason it.

      MoshKaDeph - 2013-02-11 09:19

      Paper that no one buy

      Matthew - 2013-02-11 09:22

Sounds abit much hey.I mean, arnt the papers getting paid to advertise things in their papers? idk,it just dosnt add up.smells fishy

  • dewet.duplessis.90 - 2013-02-11 09:09

Yes Nazeem, that is what they are saying, these guys are incompetent and corrupt. And you saying........

  • eric.tau.35 - 2013-02-11 09:10

im starting a township newspaper. It will be called kasi press and i demand eskom, saa, transnet and telkom to advertise in it. Even if I only circulate 100 copies i still require a few millions worth of advertising spend. and then i will be hosting a few sponsored business breakfasts. Slight problem though...I need an editor. Anyone keen?

      Revelgen - 2013-02-11 09:23

You got it, eric. The New Age in a nutshell.

  • gary.desousa.5 - 2013-02-11 09:13

Using your words Howa, maybe those ceo do not know what they doing weither black or white, you dont know either way. Its simple you do not get your circulation audited and till you do we are entitled to think what we want. The list of main advertisers are gov type organizations which is funded via taxes largly and so we have a say. See you have been outed as a reverse racist ,I have not implied any colour in the percieved wrongdoings.

  • richard.scully2 - 2013-02-11 09:19

I suspect City Press is correct and that the New Age contention that the heads of the parastatals are corrupt and don't know what they are doing is also correct

      charles.banda.9212 - 2013-02-11 10:30

1000% correct! you the boss Richard.

  • Molifi_Tshabalala - 2013-02-11 09:20

      adrien.mcguire - 2013-02-11 10:04

@ Molifi. Exactly. If he had a credible paper he would have been telling the world how effective this advertising spend was !

@molifi just so you know Ronald is refering to you (all blacks) when he says "they"...#just saying

  • Revelgen - 2013-02-11 09:21

Sheesh, Nazeem Howa, you are such a typical cANCer supporter, pulling out the worn old race card to try and justify your existence. Fact: the New Age is an ANC propaganda machine. Fact: it has only a few thousand actual genuine subscribers (i.e. those who pay out for it out of their own pockets, not from ANC sources, paid for by us taxpayers). Fact: you would not exist if government departments did not use our taxpayer money to advertise in the New Age. Nielsen reports do not lie, unlike Mr Howa and the ANC.

      patrick.mettle.7 - 2013-02-11 10:05

Agree. On top of that, no marketing manager would support a paper with no credible demographics unless it was at bargain rates. Therefore the only conclusion possible is that they are being forced to advertise or they are incompetent. I suggest both.

  • eyesears.handsfeet - 2013-02-11 09:23

Nazeem Howa, with all due respect: There is a difference between CEO's of Telkom, Eskom and Transnet applying their minds and CEO's being FORCED into something. Trying to shift this from yourselves only makes you look more guilty of doing something wrong than otherwise. How wise are you to wash your own dirty laundry in public?

  • willem.louw.16 - 2013-02-11 09:28

Well u said it boet! Corruption is rife, over expenditure and people "not applying their minds" run around like wild fire. It has nothing to do with race or skin color, it has to do with the political party in power... If u look at the top democratic countries u will find that there are multiple parties who have a fighting chance at government... It is the key cornerstone to a healthy democracy. SA is practically autocratic because no single party has enough weight to oppose the ANC on a grand scale. The fight and the small battles 1 by 1

  • Traygon - 2013-02-11 09:30

I completely lost interest in anything that Nazeem Howa said in this article when he referred to the criticism as "racist"...

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2013-02-11 10:59

Traygon, yes and that 'racist' remark coming from an Indian is really amusing. Reminds me a bit of Jesse Duarte and her identity crisis.

  • nicholus.nakanyane - 2013-02-11 09:31

Racism is really their home run swing ha?besides,if ur under political deployment nd u not productive..people will talk its not racism..its u..ur not fit.

  • robqb - 2013-02-11 09:31

Please clear the air as I have a feeling I'm being a bit doff! I can understand Telkom and the Railways advertising as they have competition in their respective markets. BUT, why does Eskom have to advertise, where is their competition?

      freddie.l.roux - 2013-02-11 09:53

Does Telkom really have competition? That's what they want us to think but they still have the monopoly over the infrastructure. Eskom need to pay millions for good PR to try and convince us they need more money and that we should use electricity sparringly while they have staff functions for millions of R's, overspend on building power stations and poor coal management systems, paying CEO's and execs huge salaries as well as sponsoring millions of R's for breakfasts for a newspaper that only has a few thousand subscibers. So you see it's going to take a lot of PR to clean-up that image. Oh wait it's so tarnished there is no point?

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2013-02-11 11:02

Robgb. No competition. It is called keeping the newspaper supporting our party afloat. No more no less.

  • Henry Rakhoabe - 2013-02-11 09:33

i agree new age is just one of the ANC tools

  • MarkH - 2013-02-11 09:35

So, you're not denying the facts - merely playing the race card, thus proving not only the allegations but giving substance to the fact that the enterprises you mentioned are poorly managed by incompetent people. Well done. You, sir, should be in government with your buddies.

  • charles.olivier.545 - 2013-02-11 09:43

  • rob.vanjou - 2013-02-11 09:47

"It’s similar to the patronising and racist mindset of some of opposition politicians who imply that..." As soon as you see the race card being played you know they're onto something. Run forrest run

      byron.matthews.562 - 2013-02-11 10:15

yes, because it doesnt exist right? There are only critics who are anti-ANC and not anti-black as is evidenced on this impartial site everyday, right? But it doesnt exist, so lets trivialize it and dismiss it because it doesnt exist. That will help. It doesnt exist which makes life like a box of chocolates.

      rob.vanjou - 2013-02-11 10:23

@Byron Difficult to understand what you are trying to say but I'll take a guess. Yes racism exists. However, just because a white person ctricises something or someone does not mean it is racist. White people are allowed to have opinions as well and by saying that all white people are racist is racist. You can take it that way if you are looking for an easy way out and have no other argument, it seems to work for the most part (although I'd argue not so much anymore). The very definiton of the word has been trivialised due to it being used so off-handedly. Everything nowadays is racist.

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2013-02-11 11:06

Byron.matthews,562. Racism exist. It is the only thing both colours have in common. Black and white racism flourishes like never before.

  • Lucky - 2013-02-11 10:35

a ceo who makes such broad-based generalisations and reemarks about racism can only be racist himself. you are too quick on the racist trigger mr, and seriously lacking in intellect if,as a ceo, this is your defence! just as well you give away all those copies at every telkom outlet, for free!!

  • saud.abrahams.7 - 2013-02-11 10:39

This newspaper is distributed - free of charge - on buses and malls almost every day here in Cape Town. Telkom always has a full one page advert on a daily basis too. I'd love to know just how much units get shifted because its pretty obvious that this paper is being bankrolled by the taxpayer. Well done on exposing them Zille!!!!

Oh come now New Age. You already have zero credibility, and are well known to be the mouth piece of the cANCer. You have learnt your boss' (jerkoff zoomdoof) habits of just denying everything with no evidence to support your indignant protests. Lol. Idiots. No wonder your circulation is so crappy. Lmao

  • lee.brand.73 - 2013-02-11 11:00

The numbers speak for themselves. According to this chop you are either a racist (you can see the corruption) or an idiot (you cant see it because you believe the chop!). Given the two options I guess I am a racist then. I have a problem with lying, thieving politicians and their thieving puppets. BTW - i dont give a zot what colour they are.

  • megan.riddell.16 - 2013-02-11 11:44

As a fixed line telephone operator, Telkom has no competition so why does it need aggressive advertising? Since Eskom is the only source of electricity in this country, why do they need to advertise? With the exception of "holiday trains" transnet is the only form of train transport available to the citizens of this country, why do they need to advertise? Before the creation of the New Age, were these parastatals spending as much in advertising through other media resources? I know a business owner who ended up spending a great deal of money trying to keep her business afloat when according to Telkom "cable theft" resulted in her having no phone line or internet for more than 4 weeks. Their excuse: the line will be fixed once we have the money to sort it out... So, no money to fix cables but R34 million can be spent on advertising that they technically do not need! I still don't understand why when my tax money is keeping Telkom in business I still have to pay line rental...

  • Rob - 2013-02-11 12:24

So according to Howa, if you imply that someone doesn't know what they are doing, you are racist? Wow! How is that even possible. Race card? I think so...

  • edward.tillett.98 - 2013-02-11 12:47

Here's a question Mr. Nazeem Howa—are you saying that government institutions, including parastatals, are not inherently corrupt? A simple yes or no answer will suffice.

  • warren.mudge.5 - 2013-02-11 13:12

So if it is a black opposition party, it is not racist to question the leadership skills in the parastatals, it is acceptable, cultural, but if it is a so called " white " opposition party english or afrikaans it is racist. Mr Howa, your obvious loyal cowtowing to the ANC and blatant arrogance toward the freethinking citizens of this country under siege by this corrupt ANC led government is very disturbing.

  • phaldiemeyer - 2013-02-11 13:29

how!!! as normal...if I don't have an answer to your question, my ace up my that trustworthy race card!!! nazeem you're pathetic!!

  • mario.v.calcagni - 2013-02-11 14:17

The management at Parastatals are corrupt never mind the color of the management. This is so in every nation I can think off. The brothers and sisters at the new age should not be so sensitive. If a manager is corrupt and he happens to be black it says something about the actions of the person and the culture of the organization. But nice try in jumping into the race debate to doge scrutiny. You tricked millions

  • nhlanhla.madide - 2013-02-11 14:23

I'm reading the New Age, there are no black-people-haters pretending to care for the poor, while using that "stance" to spew insults at us which stink of hatred. By the way, I'm not defending the government nor the ANC, I'm defending people.

  • pieter.botha.3591 - 2013-02-11 15:55

I was just wondering why Eskom, Telkom and Transnet have to advertize if they have the monopoly in any way. They have no competition. If you advertize it is to let people use your service instead of the competions service.

  • ivan.leon2 - 2013-02-11 16:55

Nazeem Howa and his 'parastatal' cadres @ Transnet, Eskom, Telkom, SAA, SABC, SANRAL, etc. may find these useful: Printable PDF versions are available here - make sure you get them laminated to prevent any 'gravy-stains' when using them:

  • johleneh - 2013-02-11 17:28

By implication, City Press is saying these CEOs and their management teams are incompetent and corrupt. "In my view, City Press’s story is part of an ongoing and sustained narrative that says since black people (read the ANC) have taken over the running of our government, major corporations and parastatals, those involved are inherently corrupt,” Howa said in a report in The New Age. YES, THEY ARE ALL CORRUPT AND INCOMPETENT, not because they are black as he tries to imply, but because they are cadre deployments, yes men, who will join in the looting and not blow the whistle AND not qualified. How anyone can still believe the government & its parastatals are anything but passengers on the gravy train is utterly beyond me.
