New ID gives woman new lease on life

2012-11-02 08:24

Johannesburg - A Bloemfontein woman is overjoyed after she finally received a new ID after six years of fighting with the home affairs department.

Judy du Plessis, 28, said she couldn’t have received a better gift on her birthday than a brand new ID book with a new ID number, reported Volksblad.

The single mother of two had been fighting for years with the department after her ID number was stolen. Du Plessis said she resorted to tears, threats and even considered suicide to get an ID document.

“I sat in the home affairs department offices and cried and screamed out loud. I’m very excited. A huge burden has been lifted. For the first time in six years I can live again…” said Du Plessis.

She can now open her own bank account, apply for work and bursaries for her sons - and marry her fiancé.

“It’s the beginning of a new life,” said an overjoyed Du Plessis.

These incompetent idiots are ruining lives. I myself have been waiting more than a year to get my marriage registered. Government is a joke!

      kaykay.son.50 - 2012-11-02 08:44

someone said that could have been a blessing to see if you could reconsider in the mean time. LoL!

      charlesbronson.bronson - 2012-11-02 08:50

Six years of a fight! I tell you this is apartheid's fault showerhead!!!

      matli.mokoena - 2012-11-02 09:20

now charles, you had to go make a silly comment like that neh. sigh

      klippies.coke.7 - 2012-11-02 10:17

Wow! I only had to wait four years for mine.

      susanna.smit.7 - 2012-11-02 10:33

Went to Cape Town home affairs this morning. All the staff were very friendly and helpful and I spent only 15 minutes in the building.

      fanie.gerber1972 - 2012-11-02 11:20

We renewed our Passports, applied for one for our son, and get an Unabridged birth certificate at Akasia Home Affairs office - 2 weeks and we had the passports, 10 days later the Unabridged birth certificae was there - all details correct. Well done!!! A lot depends on the office where you go to

      christopher.shining - 2012-11-02 15:09

News 24 should know better and not display the full id number??!!

  • aarchaic - 2012-11-02 08:33

Why did it take 6 months for her to get her ID after its been Issued!!! if you look closely to the photo you see DATE OF ISSUE: 2012-04-25 and this appart from Fight the 6 years to get it issued!

  • Sheilan.Clarke - 2012-11-02 08:37

I wouldn't display my ID number for all to see. With all this fraud going on....

      jigg.head - 2012-11-02 08:51

Was about to say the same thing. If she thought she had problems before, now she's not going to be the only one opening herself a bank account and applying for bursaries. She may not even be the one to marry her fiance...

  • JohnDough - 2012-11-02 08:55

Displaying your new ID number and details is a sure-fire way of it being stolen again! Stupid News24.

  • Bokrichard - 2012-11-02 08:56

Whaaaat. Only six years!!!. You are soooo lucky girl.

      michael.laubscher.33 - 2012-11-02 09:14

They have made a mistake with the spelling of my surname and I have been trying now since 1995 to correct this. Strange thing is 2 of my kids have the correct spelling and my youngest has the same incorrect spelling as mine. My wifes ID is correct after we got married. You cannot be more incompetant than that.

  • Bokrichard - 2012-11-02 09:00

Follow up of my previous comment. We had to re-register our daughter after 28 years. They lost her whole file. We had to pay a fee for late registration of her birth.

  • joy.termorshuizen - 2012-11-02 09:04

My close friend was coming with me to France earlier this year. Her passport was blocked by home affairs as " there wer 2 people with the sam ID number!!!~!!" Whose fault is this? She only got it after intervention from the DA shadow minister. She could not get her visa in time so she could not go and lost a lot of money. This is how they willy nilly ruin peoples lives with no apology and they simply do not care!

  • lynne.vanvuren - 2012-11-02 09:06

According to Home Affairs I am still married, despite being divorced for five years....

      kaykay.son.50 - 2012-11-02 09:15

Another blessing to see if you could reconsider! LoL!

  • binti.yusuf.5 - 2012-11-02 09:06

My brother had been declared dead and has been fighting with home affairs the past five years too to get an identity book but to date nothing has been done, despite the numerous affidavits, confirmation letters that have been sent

      kaykay.son.50 - 2012-11-02 09:17

Need to check how many insurance claims he made first and all related to the dead that might have happened before they give him a go ahead!

  • alan.carstens - 2012-11-02 09:16

  • kaykay.son.50 - 2012-11-02 09:24

The editor of this article should have known better not to display the ID number on this ID book. I foresee danger here.

  • Djedgar57 - 2012-11-02 09:24

Just slip them a little something extra and get a new ID in a week.

      heibrin.venter - 2012-11-02 09:59

      danie.bredenhann - 2012-11-02 10:46

Wow didn't see that 28 part, I thought it was a late 30's early 40's lady.

      bibi.vanzyl - 2012-11-02 11:54

What does her looks and age have to do with the whole story? But if it makes you feel more of a man, sure go for it.

  • gandanga.tororo - 2012-11-02 13:34

What about the new new ID for the new new ZA (plastic one). Did the tender go to the wrong people again? Seriously still using the book, ahaaa will get a passport without the dompas.

  • duncan.terblanche - 2012-11-03 22:42

She goes on for 6 years waiting to get an ID after having her previous ID number stolen and then she gets a photo of her ID book published straight away.... I can only imagine how it got stolen the first time :S
