Johannesburg - Brigadier Zwelibanzi Nyanda has been appointed as the new chief of the Johannesburg Metro Police Department [JMPD], the Saturday Star reported.

Nyanda's appointment was approved by the city council this week, the newspaper reported.

He is a former head of the SA Police Service crime intelligence's operational response and border policing units.

Nyanda takes over from current chief Chris Ngcobo in August.

Ngcobo had been on the helm of JMPD for more than a decade when his term expired in June 2011. He was then asked to remain in his position while the city searched for a suitable candidate.

The council recommended that Nyanda be appointed on a fixed four-year contract, subject to his meeting all requirements as per municipal regulations.
