Durban - KwaZulu-Natal's provincial ambulance service took delivery of 63 new ambulances on Thursday.

The vehicles, valued at R35.5m, were handed over to the provincial government's Emergency Medical Services (EMS) at a ceremony in Durban attended by health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo.

"This new fleet is introduced to top up and, in most cases replace, the current number of ambulances that the Province has," said Dhlomo.

EMS currently operates more than 300 ambulances across the province and employs approximately 2 500 paramedics.

Dhlomo said that the province had in 2012 replaced all of EMS's 384 ambulances, but that accidents and wear and tear had taken their toll on the vehicles.

"We are a province that is home to more than 10 million people which amounts to 21% of the population of the country. At least 80% of these people depend on the public health sector for their medical and health needs," he said, adding that the EMS was the largest ambulance service in the country.

Dhlomo announced in his budget speech on Wednesday that the handover would take place. He also unveiled a provincial health budget of almost R33m.

During his budget presentation he said the department would be spending R1.55bn on repairs, maintenance, renovations and refurbishment projects.
