New guidelines for E Cape houses

2012-08-20 13:00

Johannesburg - New guidelines aimed at improving the quality of reconstruction and development programme (RDP) houses in the Eastern Cape have been approved, the province's human settlements department said on Monday.

Spokesperson Lwandile Sicwetsha said the new guidelines provided for the plastering of internal and external walls, running water inside the house, an inside bathroom as well as a solar geyser.

They also provided floor tiling, a ceiling and the fencing of the yard.

"The normal houses don't have these provisions," said Sicwetsha in a statement.

The province was aiming to build 1 000 houses by the end of the year.

That doesn't solve the problem if they are built by unskilled people using inferior products. An RDP house with all of the above added to it falls down just as quickly as a house without if the standard of quality is not raised significantly.

Yip, housing standards have existed for centuries, even a few millenia if you look at the roman empire. If you use your corrupt, unskilled, political cadres, your RDP house is quite literally built on sand.

I agree with kala. Have they changed the subsidy amount or will contractors use inferior products so they can add the exstra items in the bill. Will this standard become a norm in all other provinces and what will happen with those subsidy houses.

If they can stop the rot of pilfering the cream off the top of the original tender then maybe decent houses csn be built. All to often the people who have these contracts take the cream and whats left over they recuit unskilled workers because they are cheap labour, they buy and stretch the inferior materials and hence a shoddy job is done. Where are the building inspectors, surely there should be inspectors going around inspecting the workmanship. Look what Shaun Mpisane got away with and she is still building these RDP homes. Stop inflated tenders, and take more control of what is going on. Too much corruption as usual.
