New mosque a symbol - Zuma

2012-10-04 15:56

Johannesburg - The construction of a new mosque, the largest in the southern hemisphere, is symbolic of growing relations between South Africa and Turkey, President Jacob Zuma said on Thursday.

"We're happy about this development because it builds on the diplomatic and economic relationship with Turkey."

The mosque was built by Turkish businessman Orhan Celik.

"[The mosque] completes our effort to advance our values of religious harmony as approved by our Constitution," Zuma said.

He was speaking at the opening of the Nizamiye Complex.

The official opening was attended by Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane, Economic Development Minister Ebrahim Patel, and a trade delegation from Turkey, which included that country's minister of economic development.

There were also hundreds of people from South Africa's Muslim and Turkish communities.

Growing trade relations

The mosque includes a clinic, bazaar, sports and recreation facilities, and a school.

Patel said it was the largest mosque in the southern hemisphere and the largest religious education complex in the country.

Zuma said trade relations between South Africa and Turkey had been continually growing since relations formed with the advent of democracy.

South Africa's exports to Turkey increase by 20% to R3.5bn in the past year.

Imports had increased by 78% to R3.6bn in 2011 from the previous year.

      john.smit.121772 - 2012-10-04 21:37

Zuma should be less occupied with symbols, and more concerned with corruption and a country that is burning. That is too much to ask of him and his cronies

What they don't teach you at pre-school is that religious institutions get crazy tax relief. For them to be so good at collecting cash you'd figure they'd have some responsibility, perhaps help us flip that massive bill for JZ's digs, but no. So they spent it on a new palace for religion, which gets tax relief. Why is he even hanging with people that don't pay taxes in the first place? This is all bullpoop. Its in Midrand. The race between the Muslims and the Chinese to take over Africa shifts into top gear. My money is on the Chinese cause they don't use religion as a tool to kill people, they just know how to pay people just enough to keep people alive while they work them to death. They will be tough taskmasters as some Africans have discovered. Our current lot have a big shake up coming. Already America owes the Chinese so much money to pay for the wars they have waged.

  • tshivhombelaf - 2012-10-04 16:42

One thing I know for sure is that they let anyone build a Christian church on their soil.

      squeegee.pilot - 2012-10-04 16:59

You mean they DON'T allow christian churches.. You are right. They squeal when you say a word but persecute Christians continuously.

I don't mean to be racist, arabs don't tolerate anyone trying to preach the gospel in their countries...i appreciate diversity but this too much. Even in Kzn there was a case involving a middle-eastern donor who provided bursaries to students who convert to islam. Why...can't they just offer help only without some suprises. In my future bilionare life i'm going to build the largest sacred venue for performing african rituals in northern hemisphere...guess where? SAUDI ARABIA

      jacob.ndlovu.3 - 2012-10-05 01:09

Ja,, you right. Imagine other religions trying to build churches etc in majority Muslim countries. They would suffer quite a few personal attacks. Dont believe then I suggest you look into it. Explain this then, why is it that the Christian minority in Turkey and many other majority Muslim countries, non muslims are marginalised, suffer discrimination, slander, personal attacks and attacks against churches on a daily basis. If you dont believe just google it and there are plenty stories out there. Funny how democratic(non muslim) countries are tolerant towards Muslims but when we are in their countries we have few rights compared to Muslims.Religion of Peace...whatever, more like the religion of intolerance. Dont belive me...just do some research and look it up!

      Pooksie Poodles - 2014-07-06 18:58

OK but V, this is not an Arab mosque. This is a Turkish mosque which follows Imam Fethullah Gulen. This is a truly tolerant and peaceful form of Islam, and right now they are part of the opposition movement against the Arabist Erdogan government. Believe it or not, peaceful forms of Islam actually do exist. Nizamiye mosque practices one of them.

  • thunder.clap.587 - 2012-10-04 17:46

      jacob.ndlovu.3 - 2012-10-05 01:01

Only because Muslim families breed like rabbits. Remember atheism is fst catching up and count yourself lucky that you are allowed to build a mosque in South Africa. If other religions tried the same in Muslim countries they would not tolerate it. Thats a fact! The religion of peace...whatever, more like the religion of intolerance and permanent offence!

      Pooksie Poodles - 2014-07-06 18:58

No. Not the type of Islam practiced by this mosque, Thunder.

  • mnmwale - 2012-10-04 19:41

This is bad news for the indigenous people of South Afrhca and the whole southern African region. A mosque is not what a country struggling to modernise itself requires. It's educational institutions and factories that are needed. If Zuma is interested in relgious tolerence, I would like to ask him: How many churches has he built in the muslim world? Why should religious tolerance be about the buildhng of mosques in South Africa while non-muslims are not being tolerated in the muslim countries that openly describe themselves as \Islamic Republics\? Wake up Mr Zuma, can't you see you are being made to speak and work against the nterests of your own people because of money and mere manipulation?

      jacob.ndlovu.3 - 2012-10-05 01:10

Ja, well said Mnmwale! At least there are some South Africans out there understand the hidden agenda behind this mosque. If a muslim tells you islam is a religion of peace they are either ignorant or lying (taqiyya), people should read the quran, hadith, sirah and sunnah. Once you read all those books you will realise what islam is, nothing but a false totalatarian ideology invented by hate mongerers, thieves, murderers and pedophiles.Islam has no foundations other than Muhammeds murderous rantings (Koran and Hadith). The Koran consists of two conflicting parts Meccan and Medina (peaceful and violent respectively). The Medinan stuff supersedes (abrogates) the Meccan stuff. Muslims act Medinan, but quote Meccan verses to the gullible infidels. Imagine other religions trying to build churches etc in majority Muslim countries. They would suffer quite a few personal attacks. Dont believe then I suggest you look into it. Explain this, why is it that the Christian minority in Turkey and many other majority Muslim countries, non muslims are marginalised, suffer discrimination, slander, personal attacks and attacks against churches on a daily basis. That is not a foot in the door. This is a boot all tied up in ribbons, powdered & perfumed in the traditional Ottoman style. Just observe the steady decline of Europe under the funded expansion of Islam.Saudis centre stage please .Take a bow. Be VERY VERY careful. The new brand Muslims since Khomeini are not the people that we remember from way back. They are not like the neatly dressed Mormons who DO take no for an answer! After all we unbelievers are Kuffar living in a state of Haraam.(Sin) We are to be converted & conquered ultimately. Read all about it Folks. For our delightful really pleasant as a person(I am told) head of state Maybe a COLD shower would work to establish a good flow of blood to the upper extremities when attempting a friendly footing with members of this ideology. But then again, behind that broad smile and gleaming glasses perhaps a little plan is hatching. Perhaps another Moo for the milkshed. Just a passing thought....

  • Pooksie Poodles - 2014-07-06 19:09

Folks, please don't confuse the Muslims at this mosque with Islamist sects like the Salafis, Deobandis, and Jafari and Zaidi Shi'ites. I know it's hard to believem, but there actually are peaceful Islamic sects out there. Nizamiye Mosque follows the teachings of Imam Fethullah Gulen, a Sufi-inspired Sunni-oriented mystic, who preaches tolerance, peacefulness, and human dignity. The Gulenists are part of the opposition to the Erdogan Arabist government, because Gulen's Islam is basically classical Turkish Islam. Did you know that when the Gaza Flotilla incident happened, and Israel got a lot of flak for protecting themselves and for killing nine Islamist aggressors, Imam Gulen criticized the TURKISH government for allowing the flotilla to set sail into Gaza waters without Israel's consent? Other peaceful Islamic sects besides for the Gulenists include the Ahmadis, Bohras, Bektashis, Ibadhis, some of the Ismailis, and numerous Sufi sects. These groups endure intense abuse at the hands of the Sunni and Shi'ite Islamists.
