New power substation set for Lion Park area

ESKOM plans to build the biggest power substation southeast of Pietermaritzburg in KZN that will augment power supplies to the city and the province.

The station, situated on about 60 hectares of land, will be built near the Lion Park area within the jurisdiction of the Mkhambathini Municipa


But some businesses and environmental organisations, including a bird sanctuary operating close to the site, have expressed concern that the development might interfere with their operations.

Eskom said in a documentIn a proposal document placed at the Mkhamabthini offices that the sub-station willis meant to

provide distribute electricity to parts of Pietermaritzburg and the rest of KZN, and will become one of the main substations drawing power from power plants in Mpumalanga.

It said the power supply in KZN is constrained and needed to be augmented.

She said: “For these reasons Eskom needs to establish new 765kV and 400kV transmission lines, linking the main power generation facilities in theMpumalanga province to the load centres in KZN.”

But A scoping Report, detailed howsomethe businesses in the area were concerned about the noise and the lights, and the cables that the new development would require.

Rainbow Chicken said it was worried that the children, it said had raised concerns that thepresence of light and noise could interfere with broiler chicken operations.

A thebird sanctuary in the area also raised concern that the presence of cables could interfere with the flights oftheir birds, or have a negative impact on its bird tracking operations
