NEW and easy accessible routes will be explored in Ladysmith by the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) following a severe increase in traffic along the N11.

Sanral has appointed consulting engineers AECOM and environmental practitioners Terratest to do a route options study in the area.

“Traffic volumes using National Route N11 between the N3 highway and the N11 north of Ladysmith … have over the last number of years increased, thereby reducing its traffic carrying capacity. This is mainly due to the N11 passing through Ladysmith, which in itself has shown an increase in local traffic,” said Noluthando Lamula of Meropa Communications.

Lamula said the National Route 11 linking KZN and Mpumalanga provides both a “strategic link for freight movement as well as linking a number of municipalities between both provinces”.

“It also provides a key link to the N3 between Durban and Gauteng, which is part of government’s Strategic Integrated Project 2,” she said.

The investigation will be done in conjunction with the Emnambithi Local Municipality, KZN Department of Transport, property owners and others such as the Chamber of Business and farmers associations. Public partition days are planned in the near future where route options will be displayed.

An environmental impact assessment would be done, Lamula added
