Newborn found in plastic bag

2012-05-01 14:28

Johannesburg - A newborn baby boy was found in a plastic bag on Tuesday morning in Dhlamini, Soweto, Gauteng police said.

"This morning, around 10:00, a 13-year-old boy was walking around Dhlamini when he noticed a plastic bag with something moving in the bag. He ran and fetched an older man," said Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela.

"They found a baby boy who is 1-day old and police were called. The ambulance arrived and the boy was taken to hospital for treatment. A case of child abandonment was opened," he said.

The mother's whereabouts are unknown.

This was the second time a baby was abandoned in Soweto in less than a week, with a 1-day-old baby left on a doorstep in Zola late Sunday evening.

"Police have noticed several cases of child abandonment even in the last week. We appeal to the community to please assist us in finding the mothers of these children," said Makhubela.

these perpetrators should get a tough punishment when found.South Africa is a democratic country women know they have right not to fall pregnant, give child for adoption or legally abort. Then why this?

  • stefaans.blaauw - 2012-05-01 15:02

The value of life in Africa, a plasic bag, a dustbin, a toilet, and mummy screw on. This is Africa Culture

      Tumelo - 2012-05-01 15:16

Who told you this only happens in Africa?

      Yar - 2012-05-01 15:29

      I told him

      Bless Boswell - 2012-05-01 17:03

      Well you are wrong...

      Yar - 2012-05-01 18:52

@Bless you I understand that, but look carefully at Tumelo's overreaction. Stefaans said "Africa culture" to which Tumelo's response is "only Africa". Tumelo needs the chips on his shoulder slapped off!

      Yar - 2012-05-02 08:22

@Tumelo & Bless you Just heard the news this morning. Apparently there are 200 cases a month like this. Disgusting!!!

  • Shirley - 2012-05-01 15:02

Is this how people treat their "blessings" in this country? Make it mandatory for all girls from thirteen to be on contraception!!! Sew holes shut-whatever it takes!!!! Contraception is free, alas morals and conscience are missing. There is NO excuse for this cruel behaviour. I hope they find the bit@h and sterilizer her [without anesthetic]!!!!What the hell are/arent parents teaching these delinquents????

      Lynn - 2012-05-01 16:38

13 THIRTEEN..... DONT YOU MEAN SIX 6 .... Kids these days are ready to reproduce before they are born....

  • Rethamyh - 2012-05-01 15:05

These women who cannot keep their legs closed act like idiots when a child comes out of them but making that baby was all good 9 months ago..condoms, adoption agencies and and and!!!

  • Deana - 2012-05-01 15:18

Absolutely horrific and disgusting! What kind of human being can consciously put their offspring in a plastic bag and dispose of it? Contraceptives are free, abortions legal, adoption agencies are everywhere! Hope they find that \thing\ - she's not worthy of the word mother!

      braamc - 2012-05-01 15:32

      Its not human yet

      Bless Boswell - 2012-05-01 17:01

Braam - that's absolute twak! You've you ever been a parent? By the sound of it you have not. Your baby is human before you even know its there. It knows you are there - ask any mother ...

      Irene - 2012-05-01 19:08

Bless ~ I think you'll find that braamc was referring to the mother and not the baby. The mother is not human because only a savage would do this to a little child.

  • Sivuyile - 2012-05-01 15:35

I think we are reaching the end of time'If the mother can leave a child in plastic where are those mothers who will do anything to save their children from hunger and abuse.

      Jana - 2012-05-02 11:51

Why does everything have to mean it's "the end of time"? Come on... Really!

  • claudia.grove2 - 2012-05-01 15:38

Woman who are guilty of throwing their babies in dumpsters ect should be sterilized.

      Cassandra Eileen Olivier - 2012-05-01 16:11

Yes you right they should be sterilised they don't deserve to have children when they abandon them

      waterloo.mathis - 2012-05-01 17:33

Throwing a baby is a hard and painful process. In one hand it's their mothers' faults. In other hand the government is to be blamed for that. An educated woman cannot throw her a baby in a plastic bag! It's all down to poverty that these shocking processes are happening. The government need to support all those poor families in soweto in order to prevent women from throwing their babies.

      George - 2012-05-01 17:40

Well it is murder so they should be executed. What is the problem?

      George - 2012-05-01 17:44

In a macabre way this event defines the ANC modus operandi. Enjoy the pleasure, when the responsibility arrives wrap it up and make it someone else's problem. No honor, no self control. The ancestors are very angry about the death of any child and the tokolosh will visit all those responsible.

      Irene - 2012-05-01 19:10

waterloo ~ Neither the government, nor poverty is to blame for this. The fault lies squarely with the mother. If she is poor and cannot raise a child, she shouldn't be screwing around without a condom. Finished and klaar.

      waterloo.mathis - 2012-05-01 19:21

Irene: if that woman had money or the opportunity to be educated, she wouldn't have done what she did.

      Irene - 2012-05-01 19:27

Waterloo ~ So you're saying that if you have money and are educated, you won't fall pregnant?

      waterloo.mathis - 2012-05-01 19:42

Irene: you will fall pregnant, but you won't throw the baby.

      Irene - 2012-05-01 19:49

Waterloo ~ No, you're wrong. If I had no money, that's when I'd make sure my partner used 3 condoms, let alone 1. If you want to have unprotected sex and land up pregnant, you can only blame yourself and NOBODY else. Her behaviour is disgusting. Not even animals behave in this way, so please don't look for excuses for her revolting behaviour.

      Irene - 2012-05-01 20:12

Waterloo ~ It's called accountability ie. taking responsibility for your actions. The thing that gave birth to this little baby obviously hasn't learnt this basic principle in life. Worse still, if she didn't want the child there was no need to put it in a plastic bag and leave it in a dustbin to die. That is just not human and it makes absolutely no difference how much money or education the person has.

      James - 2012-05-01 21:07

its a fact of life that more often than not, the poorer people are the more they breed!

      stefaans.blaauw - 2012-05-02 11:23

The punishment for murder should not be sterilisation, it should be the death penalty or a life sentence in Jail, without possibility of parole. Otherwise they could use this action as a freebee for sterlisation??

Community in soweto hv to investigate ol d ladies whch wer pregnant, shameless women y dd she gv birth to hm,

  • Cassandra Eileen Olivier - 2012-05-01 16:17

To the people who abandon there babies, if you don't want to have a baby keep your legs closed or use contraceptives or condoms. If you do fall pregnant give your child up for adoption there is lots families that cant have babies that would love to adopt yours

  • Andriette - 2012-05-01 16:23

While there is a lot of bad mouthing of the mothers, also remember it takes 2 people to make a baby and that you should not point finger before knowing the circumstances but it is still wrong to abandon a child. Both the mother and father must take responsibility. There are a lot of influences that could lead to unwanted pregnancies and abandonment of the baby i.e. finances, family pressure, religious beliefs, contraceptives not available etc. Focus on getting rid of the root cause.

  • Natascha - 2012-05-01 16:36

Even animals have more parental intincts...

  • Bless Boswell - 2012-05-01 16:58

Finding the mothers is of no value - they don't want their babies. That much is evident. It's not as if she'll be sterilized when she's found - nothing will happen with way - so don't bother. Put the baby up for adoption.

  • Zinhle Nhlapho - 2012-05-01 19:42

ooh my God , how could she do a terrible thing like this eish, this is end of world

  • Cynthia - 2012-05-25 15:22

Why can't these women take their unwanted babies to a home for abandoned children instead of leaving them in a pit toilet, or tie them up in a plastic bag or a dustin bin. How can they walk away from such an evil act? Does any innocent child deserve this?
