Durban - A group of men thought to be behind a tanzanite fraud syndicate were bust in police sting on Durban’s beach front on Monday.

Their potential victim had read about a similar syndicate on News24 and contacted a city private investigator who was dealing with the dossier of cases.

PI Sean Peirce said the victim read the stories on News24 and then approached him.

"He said that this same lot had scammed him out of R10 000 six years ago and then messed up and contacted him again to offer him the same deal. He got me involved and then played along,” Peirce said.

“He went through the whole scam process and when the final meeting was to take place, we enlisted the help of police crime intelligence and before the money changed hands, we took them.”

The three have been linked to a case of theft under false pretences and a fake tanzanite gem was seized in the raid.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said: “All suspects will be charged for dealing in tanzanite stones and theft by false pretences. They were taken to the police station for detention, where they remain in custody.”

“The suspects are linked to a case of theft by false pretences that occurred in July at a restaurant opposite the service station at Umhlanga. An undisclosed amount of cash was stolen during that incident. Suspects will appear in Durban Magistrate's Court soon,” Zwane added.
