Cape Town - As the South African Press Association closed its doors on Tuesday night, News24's new national reporting team prepared to swing into action.

Starting at 05:00 on Wednesday morning, the national newsroom began reporting breaking stories for the News24 audience and our News24Wire service, which also went live at the same time.

The News24Wire is being offered as a replacement to Sapa. The content produced by our team across South Africa and elsewhere in Africa - and augmented by additional material from the DPA agency and non-profit journalism start-up, GroundUp - is being offered free to digital publishers and on a subscription basis for publishers on other platforms.

By mid-morning nearly two dozen news, sport, finance and entertainment stories had already been published, including preview coverage of Wednesday's by-elections across South Africa, fall-out from the dismissal of Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi, a report on controversial remarks by President Jacob Zuma's son, Edward Zuma, on foreign nationals and breaking news of the shooting of a Johannesburg bus driver.

Publishers interested in our free digital feed can register at the News24Wire site. Those interested in the subscription offering can visit our partners GalloImages.
