Durban - A former Irish rugby player who has retired in Durban has described how "nice" robbers gave him his cancer medication and a glass of water when he told them he wasn't feeling well.

Kloof resident Sam Hutton, 72, told The Mercury how the gang helped him take his medication and even asked him if he felt better.

Hutton said the robbers were "nice chaps" although they tied up him and his wife Wendy, 65, and proceeded to rob them of their belongings.

Hutton said four men armed with knives and a gun overpowered him at 03:00 in the morning earlier in the week. After the couple were warned not to retaliate, the robbers ransacked the house.

One of the men wanted Hutton's bracelet but didn't take it when he was told it was for the relief of throat cancer.

The robber immediately returned the bracelet and apologised.

“They spoke exceptional English and even got me my medication. They were professional. I was surprised,” said Hutton.

Before leaving, the gang asked if the couple was fine, then stole their two cars - a gold-coloured Mercedes-Benz and a white Corolla, before driving off with the loot.

Police were investigating.
