Niehaus owes landlord thousands

2012-05-11 11:29

Johannesburg - Former ANC spokesman Carl Niehaus still has not paid a former landlord rental arrears for a house in Midrand, The Times reported on Friday.

Eric Corbishley claims Niehaus owes him R344 108 in rental arrears, plus interest. He has also failed to comply with several default judgments against him.

Corbishley's attorney Jannie Coetzee said after several broken promises to settle arrears, his client had been forced to get an eviction order and a default judgment in 2009.

"We heard nothing from him for months. He just disappeared without a forwarding physical [or] e-mail address, and he did not answer his phone," said Coetzee.

Broke and blacklisted three years ago, Niehaus resigned from the ANC in the wake of the scandal. He said he had been overwhelmed by ANC business and blamed his travels with President Jacob Zuma and disarray in the party for his failure to repay his debts.

Corbishley said he was stunned to hear in a recent radio interview that Niehaus had settled all his debts, estimated at R4.5m. These included R700 000 he owed Rhema church and R24 000 he owed then director-general in the presidency Frank Chikane.

Comment from Niehaus was not available for the article.

Once a crook, always a crook.

      Squeegee - 2012-05-11 11:57

Let's see him spin this one. "I forgot" or "The cheque is in the mail".

      Christopher - 2012-05-11 12:08

How do you owe a church money!! this is why religion is rotten to the core. They promise you things in the afterlife but in order for you to be accepted and get to the afterlife you need to hand over a percentage of your hard esarned money in order to be accepted in the aftrerlife which they dont even have a clue about. Only Stupid people follow these kinds of preachers. Thats all they are preachers, preaching you out of your money. I bet now you thinking why the hell did I give so much of my money to Rhema Church over all these years. You could have been well off and living a happy life with your family. Now your family is feeling the brunt of your stupidity. You were corrupt because maybe you were trying to please your preacher.

      Squeegee - 2012-05-11 12:19

Christopher, you Dweeb, he was employed by the church and he stole from them. The church was fooled - just like the ANC - into trusting this liar.

      Nosiphom - 2012-05-11 12:20

And Christopher your money may not guarantee you the afterlife anyway. I am yet to see someone who enjoys the afterlife - oops maybe I should die first - not attractive after all would rather live the now life!

      Elizabeth - 2012-05-11 12:30

Epitomy of a DRAADSITTER aka TWEE-GESIG.....

      Christopher - 2012-05-11 12:33

@Squeezer, the article was a bit vague on that, understanding your point....but why was a corrpupt official working for the church?

      Deon - 2012-05-11 12:42

He took a loan from his employer the church, increased the loan. Many people in Gov. seems to also have bad credit records. Even the Pres. wrote out many cheques that "bounced".

  • Peter - 2012-05-11 11:53

I see the rehab hasn't really helped much. The lies keep rolling.

  • Fredster - 2012-05-11 11:56

My question is: What is the ANC using him for with all this "coming out the woodworks" Are they busy covering something else up, or is he a diversion for something?

  • Gary - 2012-05-11 11:59

These guys want to run the country but they cannot even afford to own there own houses- what kind of role model do we have?

      Steve - 2012-05-11 12:51

Why should they lay out money to own a house when they can expect to get everything for zilch???????

  • Frank - 2012-05-11 12:03

    Karma is a bitch

  • Frank - 2012-05-11 12:07

@ Christopher wait for the next religious story to trash the church doing it here just makes you look obsessive .

      Christopher - 2012-05-11 12:14

Not at all. I am over all these religious stories on news 24, but people are so screwed up when it comes to these new aged church this and that, giving their money away fro the church leaders owning a fleet of luxury cars and beautiful houses. If they were real men of the Lord tehy would be giving away there wealth to charities etc.

      edwardsch - 2012-05-11 12:27

Christopher, I see that you can speak sense, if you want to !!!!

  • koos.vandermerwe.92 - 2012-05-11 12:07

    In true ancESTORAL style.

  • Gieljam - 2012-05-11 12:10

He thought he was a force but is an embarrassment and a farce..

  • flysouth - 2012-05-11 12:17

I have nothing against a man who gets into financial difficulties in the normal way of business risk etc or through circumstances truly beyond his control, it does happen - but this palooka was paying R45K per month rent on a mansion - what was he thinking? Yesterday I listened to him lying on a radio show that he had repaid his debts - these ANC leopards will never change their spots!

  • Wilweet - 2012-05-11 12:19

He obviously hoped to get his hand in the cookiejar......but another cadre pushed him out of the line..

      Steve - 2012-05-11 12:52

      Missed the gravy train??????

  • Gavin - 2012-05-11 12:20

ha ha nie haus - no house

      Marion - 2012-05-11 13:46

@Gavin - That was my first thought, but it actually means 'lower house' as in living on the lower floor of a double storey etc.,

  • Carry - 2012-05-11 12:20

      koos.vandermerwe.92 - 2012-05-11 14:04

      Please don't insult me :(

  • Greg - 2012-05-11 12:22

What on earth did he owe money to Rhema Church for??

      Tony - 2012-05-11 12:34

To bribe cANCer for a political position within????

      Marion - 2012-05-11 13:47

If memory serves me right he got a loan from Rhema Church.

  • Comfido Nziyane - 2012-05-11 12:30

he lied 2da whole world, what example is he setting 2 his family. shame on him.

  • Andrew - 2012-05-11 12:32

Typical of an ANC cadre a crook through and through and nogal a Whitey even worse, Just a scumbag. Bury him permanantly but unfortunately he is high qualified for promotion within the current ANC ranks. Sad but true.

      sabongam - 2012-05-11 12:59

@ Andrew why is it even worse when the crook is a whitey, if I may ask?

      Marion - 2012-05-11 13:49

I too would like to understand what is meant by 'a whitey even worse'.

      koos.vandermerwe.92 - 2012-05-11 14:06

Because whiteys are supposed to be a example for others to follow. Seems that when you get the CancER your integrity goes for a ball.

      Marion - 2012-05-11 14:49

@koos - the colour of one's skin should make one an example to follow? I think not. Integrity is not a 'whites only' trait by any means although some delusional individuals seem to believe it is.

      Nyiks11 - 2012-05-11 16:05

@sabongam because there is no such a thing as black collar crime

  • Imtiaz - 2012-05-11 12:36

Subject: FW: Company of the year! This is true statistics...\r\nCan you imagine working for a company that has a little more than 500 employees and has the following statistics:29 have been accused of spousal abuse,7 have been arrested for fraud,19 have been accused of writing bad cheques,117 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least 2 businesses,3 have done time for assault,71 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit,14 have been arrested on drug-related charges,8 have been arrested for shoplifting,21 are currently defendants in lawsuits,84 have been arrested for drunk driving in the last year,373 in total or approximately 70%,Can you guess which organization this is?

      sven.gohre - 2012-05-11 12:49

South Africa Incorporated's Board of Directors. The one's paid exhorberant amounts of money to sit and pick their noses in a historical building, named Parliament? Is that a close enough guess?

      Marion - 2012-05-11 13:51

@Imtiaz - if these are true statistics I think they probably need to be updated. I saw that about four years ago already.

  • roberta.keeling - 2012-05-11 12:50

As I wrote a few weeks ago - the man is an out and out liar. He is desperate for money, and that is why he tried to talk his way back into the ANC. The last thing you need is to have him as your spokesman - no one would believe a word you said!

      Ze Don - 2012-05-11 13:30

Do you actually believe anything the ANC say?

      sandra.j.rennie - 2012-05-11 14:16

He would be a better Spindoctor than Mac Maharaj ! He lies with more conviction.

  • Anton - 2012-05-11 13:09

  • cecilhstephens - 2012-05-11 13:14

    E-Toll Kickback ??

  • Dani - 2012-05-11 16:08

@Christopher, what you state as giving money to the church as a ticket in the afterlife is your misinterpretation of tithing. Let me explain how tithing started. The 12 tribes of Israel owned land except for the levites (priests) who'se full time job was the priesthood, therefore to support the priests, their family and the church, the rest of the tribes had to pay a tithe (10% of salary) that same custom has been preserved to this day, and its not just the Christians who do it. the Jews too have still preserved that custom...shame Christopher, you are ignorant

  • Nyiks11 - 2012-05-11 16:11

Corrupt politicians always gravitate towards a ruling party , it happenned to the NP and it is now happenning to the ANC .Maybe in the next lifetime it will happen to the then new DA
