Cape Town - What started out as a night of fun for four friends ended with one of them allegedly beating another and leaving him for dead, it emerged in a Cape Town court this week.

The Daily Voice reported that the friends had gone out for the night on 14 March, picking up a prostitute for the ride.

One of the friends, a paraplegic, was later viciously beaten and apparently left by the side of the road in Kraaifontein.

Marvin Manuel died in hospital over two weeks later on 30 March (his 32nd birthday) due to severe head injuries and a collapsed lung.

Manuel was last seen when he met up with three friends, one of whom was Buran Blankenberg, who is now facing murder charges relating to his death.

The men went to Sholoza Villas and picked up a prostitute who was told to have sex with Manuel but he then had an epileptic seizure. The woman told police that the men had used drugs and that Blankenberg had allegedly assaulted and head-butted Manuel several times in the car when he couldn’t give him the R300 cash he had asked for.

She managed to escape from the car and went to the police.

Blankenberg was arrested two days later in Manuel’s car.

Manuel's mother said she was devastated by his death.

“Marvin’s brother’s death last year put him in a bad state of depression and he was never the same,” she told the Daily Voice.

Blankenberg applied for bail in the Blue Downs Magistrate's Court this week. The matter was postponed till next week. It emerged in court he has two pending cases against him, involving assault and attempted murder.
