Welkom – Nine students of the Welkom Central University of Technology who were arrested for public violence and contravening a court order will appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, police said.

Captain Stephen Thakeng said the nine students - seven men and two women - were arrested on Friday and released on the same day.

“The nine [students] argued that they were preparing for exams, and therefore they were released on the same day, they will make their first court appearance tomorrow,” he said.

Thakeng said last week Friday the police were called to the university where classes and administration were disrupted during the #FeesMustFall protest.

“Mothusi Road in Thabong was also blocked with rubbish which made it difficult for motorists and pedestrians to use the public road.”

Thakeng said attempts were made to negotiate with the students with no success, which resulted in stun grenades and tear gas being used to disperse the crowd.

Students nationwide were last week protesting against fee hikes.
