No decision on killer lioness

2012-02-20 11:10

Johannesburg - No decision has yet been made on whether to destroy a lioness that killed an employee at a Johannesburg Zoo conservation and research farm in the Free State, according to a report on Monday.

The Johannesburg Zoo lioness had been granted a temporary reprieve and no decision would be made until a scientific assessment of its behaviour was done by internal City of Johannesburg staff, The Star reported.

An independent police investigation was also underway.

Joe Ramonetha, 63, was either feeding the animals or cleaning the enclosure at the farm when the 11-year-old lioness, named Nyanga, attacked him last week.

Ramonetha had worked for the Johannesburg Zoo for nearly 40 years.

The incident, which at the time was blamed on human error, happened in Parys.

Just let it live!!!! it was human error

      Bob - 2012-02-20 13:17

Give her to Julias as a pet.

      Typersa - 2012-02-20 14:16

OMW these people are driving me insane!! Leave the Lioness alone!!!! It is in their nature to catch things, you should not be in a cage with a lion, end of the story!!! And lions should not be in cages to begin with!!!

  • phillipa.mill - 2012-02-20 11:19

Its not her fault, she is a wild animal and this is what they do........Nice choice of words destroy the lioness (NOT). Why dont you destroy the people that kill on purpose. LEAVE THE LIONESS ALONE

      ptmogala - 2012-02-20 11:23

      My sentiments exactly.

      Fanie - 2012-02-20 11:30

my point exactly, she is wild and will do it again. once they taste human flesh they will hunt for more. the lives of the workers will remain in danger now that the lions see them as food and not as their masters.

      janine.cronje - 2012-02-20 12:25

Fanie you chop, old wive's tales mate!

      christo.stone - 2012-02-20 12:33

Fanie, do you really think they see humans as masters? This is not the lioness' fault. There is no need to kill it.

      rlong1952 - 2012-02-20 13:52

Fanie.... please give us some scientific evidence for what you posted. It is a WILD ANIMAL, they don't have masters, good grief man, did you actually think before you hammered away at the keyboard?

      Typersa - 2012-02-20 14:18

O please Fanie, you need to wake up you clown!! You go in a cage with a Lion and we will see who is who's master. just because we have guns doesnt make us the king of the Jungle you fool!!People like you should be eliminated!!!

  • ntombiya - 2012-02-20 11:26

Please dont kill the lioness,,,,, human error !!!

      shandukane.moshatana - 2012-02-20 13:38

lions hunt and sees human as threats so leave the lion dont kill it

  • Brett - 2012-02-20 11:29

Set her free in a game farm to protect the rhino's against poachers.

      Lexa - 2012-02-20 13:21

Wow! Brett! That is spot on mate! If they think the animal might hurt again, then release it back into the wild, you never know, she may just get the better of one of these spineless poachers! High Five for Brett!

      shandukane.moshatana - 2012-02-20 13:38

bret you must be the next president

      Grant - 2012-02-20 13:53

Give Brett a "case" of Bells, great idea :)

  • rlong1952 - 2012-02-20 11:33

The gates were left open and he was attacked, how is this the lioness's fault? I am very sad that he died, but a lion is a wild animal, not a domesticated one that turned on its owners. How can they even consider destroying the animal? Rather destroy the rapists and murderers in our midst, much better.

  • Jackie - 2012-02-20 11:34

What the hell is wrong with people, these are wild animals and shouldn't be kept in captivity in the first place!! Humans should remember this when dealing with/handling these animals. The animals are only using their instinct, they weren't educated on how to deal with humans!!!

      rlong1952 - 2012-02-20 13:55

Well said Jackie, I really hate zoos. Not sure how big this one is but animals should be free and not be caged for humans to gawk at.

  • Capone - 2012-02-20 11:36

Leave her ALONE!!!!! SCIENTIFICALLY she is a wild animal & that is the risk involved when working with wild animals.

  • Ben - 2012-02-20 11:36

avatar Ben - Just posted Report comment WTF!?! Why is this still a debate?!? You cant punish a animal for killing a human!!! In the veld when one attacks fine. Self deffence and whatnot or in the zoo during the attack. But not after the fact like human capital punishment. IT'S A LION MORONS!!!!

  • irduplex - 2012-02-20 11:39

    This is barbaric!

  • sizwe - 2012-02-20 11:43

Wait a minute, "destroy" this is a living creature not a bliming fax. What did these people think they were gonna do domesticate a lion? Now that they have failed they wanna kill it. Thats just disgusting I say... Really low of them

  • Hans - 2012-02-20 11:46

So its ok for humans to kill each other and all that happens is they get a holiday for 20 years at the tax payers expense - but when a lion kills (Which she is programmed to do) she must be put down???? Send her to prison where she can carry on her killing spree and rid the planet of some of the human scum.

  • Schmee - 2012-02-20 11:47

How different the comments would have been if it was a pit bull.

      rlong1952 - 2012-02-20 12:42

A pitbull is a domesticated animal, a lion isn't. Does that explain it for you?

  • Barry - 2012-02-20 11:51

Independant investigation??? I can do it now. 1. Wild animal. 2. Human near wild animal. 3. Wild animal acts accordingly. 4. Human killed. Investigation complete. Conclusion, observe extreme caution near wild animals.

  • makesuthink - 2012-02-20 11:51

The death sentence was done away with years ago and that for one human killing another. so why now should the death sentence be passed on a wild animal doing what comes naturally after all the poor man was in her area She did not come into his house

  • Blue - 2012-02-20 11:53

    bloody racist lion !

  • godesha - 2012-02-20 12:06

Hopefully she won't have to pay the ultimate price for human error.

  • Stan - 2012-02-20 12:20

    Kill it

      rlong1952 - 2012-02-20 12:42

Nice one Stan, is that the best you can come up with, what a doorknob!!

  • Werner - 2012-02-20 12:32

..why should a majestic animal pay the price for someone elses stupidity..???? You'd think that after 40 years he'd know how to do his job..???? Keep her alive..!!!!!!

  • Andrew - 2012-02-20 12:38

If it were a human that killed, he would be out on parole in less than 5 years.

  • Dave - 2012-02-20 12:49

Let the Lioness state her case to the Mayor, may be a win win for all of us...

  • douglasnorval - 2012-02-20 12:51

What have City of Jhb staff got to do with it?

  • Charmain - 2012-02-20 12:56

She made a mistake let her live I agree Justin, but she has now tasted human blood what now??????????

      rlong1952 - 2012-02-20 13:57

Now nothing Charmain, close the gate or let her free in the wild where she should be in the first place.

  • Samantha - 2012-02-20 13:01

I am sure this man was aware that after 40 yrs on the job u DO NOT LEAVE THE GATE OPEN!- the lionness was just going by age old instinct- you cannot blame her for that!- why impose a death sentence on her and leave other murderers to live a lavish life in prison?????

  • brionyl.french - 2012-02-20 13:07

if it was human error well the consequences have happened... the animal is wild and knows no better than food comes in that door... what did you expect??? Let the Lion live its your own faults for training it to expect food through that gate....

  • Zee - 2012-02-20 13:10

    PLEASE dont kill her!!!

  • Rofhiwa Nelukalo Waboboni - 2012-02-20 13:11

    kill that sh******t animal

      Zee - 2012-02-20 13:20

Let's rather kill you. I'll have no objection to that! Save the lioness!!!!

      rlong1952 - 2012-02-20 13:46

Please use the single braincell you have before you post such a stupid comment. A human left the gate open, not the lion. Sheez, some people!!!

  • Charles - 2012-02-20 13:37

This is a tragic incident and I feel for the relatives of the man who was killed. But lions are carnivores and humans are seen as prey to lions. So it is not the lion's faults for doing what comes naturally to her. The human was at the wrong place at the wrong time. So the lion should not be killed.

  • rlong1952 - 2012-02-20 13:48

Anyone with half a braincell can figure out that it wasn't the lioness's fault. Wonder how long it will take them to figure that one out? So sad for the man and his family but not the animals fault.

  • jerry.pres - 2012-02-20 13:56

Give lion live sentence and move from prison to prison. You sort out two problems , lion is sentenced for murder and our jail will get empty.

  • Melinda - 2012-02-20 15:23

The Lion is appart of the big 5 like the rhino, do you want us to lose them as well, SAFE THE LION KILL YOURSELF

  • Evan Summerson - 2012-02-20 19:17

Sad, but hello....that's what Lions do... Its not the lions fault.
