Vavi sexual harassment hearing

2013-07-29 08:13

Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi will attend an internal hearing on a sexual harassment grievance after a 26-year-old colleague accused him of raping her. Watch.WATCH

Johannesburg - The family of the woman who alleged that Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi raped her say she has not yet laid a formal charge against him.

The woman’s family say she intends to lay the rape charge after receiving the outcome of the trade union federation’s internal investigation, Eyewitness News reported on Monday.

While Vavi has admitted to having an affair with the woman, he denies raping her.

He claims the 26-year-old woman demanded R2m in exchange for not reporting the incident.

Vavi has opened a case of extortion after claiming the 26-year-old woman demanded R2m from him in exchange for her silence.

She says she wants to give her side of the story as to why she didn’t go to police immediately after the alleged incident in January.

She has vowed to speak to the media once she has learnt the outcome of the internal investigation.

According to Weekend Post journalist Kathryn Kimberley, who first broke the news, the complainant “wanted the matter to be handled internally with Cosatu before going to [the police] because she knew the publicity it would attract”.
