No headway in Bloem hostage drama

2012-11-19 23:07

Bloemfontein - Negotiators were still trying late on Monday night to convince two inmates at the Mangaung Correctional Centre to release a doctor taken hostage.

Brigadier Billy Jones said the two prisoners were still holding the doctor at 22:00.

"The negotiations are still ongoing," he said.

Earlier, during a ward round at the facility's hospital, a male doctor and a nurse were taken hostage, reportedly by two inmates armed with knives, but the nurse was later released unharmed.

The doctor's family have been notified but police are withholding his identity from the media and general public, OFM News reported.

Police spokesperson Thabo Litabe told OFM one inmate is doing time for rape, and the other for robbery, theft and unlawful possession of fire arms.

The prisoners are demanding to be transferred to a prison in Gauteng.

The Mangaung facility is privately operated by G4S, a British multinational security services company, in partnership with the government.

The maximum security prison comprises six wings, with a hospital in the middle - where events unfolded before 11:00.

OMG, now what? Truly there is anarchy in this country now. In the movies they pump the building full of tear-gas? and get them all out. In this situation, eish..... reason obviously doesnt work. Oh my.

Well this should be an easy one to solve, the prison authorities can agree to it and load them into the van, make a u-turn back to manguang prison then check their sorry behinds into solitary confinement for the rest of their lives

      mark.singh.9889 - 2012-11-20 08:07

Exactly, why is t so hard for the prison authorities to come up with such a solution. Its not like these guys want out of prison, they want to be transferred to a prison in GP. Simply take them to a GP prison, work them good and solid and send them back to C-Max

Prisoner DEMANDING transfers?????? They gave up their rights when they committed the crime. Send them to a Mozambique jail! Hope the Doc gets out ok

  • mathilde.duplessis - 2012-11-20 07:17

They want to be transferred because they can bribe the guards at a regular prison. This prison is too well run for them to buy an escape.

  • alison.scheppel - 2012-11-20 07:28

They obviously want to transfer to a fully govt operated prison where its easier to escape from. Two snipers, two bullets, two bodybags - set the example so no-one tries again.

  • Ntshobs - 2012-11-20 08:59

Prison authorities are so dumb, why they don't agree to transfer these prosoners so that the life of the doctor can be saved & then put these guys back in the cells
