Pietermaritzburg - Zwakushiwo Mkhize, 40, from Nkandla has been hiding out in Pietermaritzburg in fear for his life since last November.

His fear stems from the fact that he had information regarding a firearm that was used to commit a murder, and also gave police information leading to the arrest of the alleged killer.

Mkhize has been trying to get a police protection as he became a target after helping the police but has not yet received any help.

He told The Witness he was shot at a “couple of times” two weeks after he gave police information about the murder, which took place in March 2013 at King Edward VIII hospital.

He said a group of people also came to his house and tried to stab him but he fought back and managed to run away. He then started moving from one place to another, and has been on the run ever since.

“Ever since the attacks started, I have been trying to get help, but the police told me that there is nothing they can do to help me, as they have done everything and the case is now closed.”

Mkhize was given a reward of R15 000 for helping the police from a private source, but said he has not received any money from the state for his contribution.

“I was made to sign a lot of documents, and I was told that I would also receive money from the state but I never did receive money or protection from the police,” said Mkhize.

SAPS spokesperson Constable Mthokozisi Ngobese said: “We are trying by all means to help Mkhize with his matter, as we cannot just ignore it.”

He said the matter was currently being handled by the provincial office of the SAPS.
