Johannesburg - The health department had not received information about a South African woman who reportedly was being tested for Ebola in Nigeria, it said on Friday.

"We have not heard anything," spokesperson Joe Maila said.

"We will wait for information."

Reuters reported that the Nigerian health authorities on Thursday said they were holding a South African national in transit to her country because she was showing potential symptoms of Ebola after working in Guinea and Sierra Leone.

The woman, who was reportedly from Cape Town, flew into Lagos airport from Morocco.

She was being treated as a suspected case and was being taken to Lagos's Ebola treatment centre for tests, according to the report.

Last month, the South African health department said there were no Ebola cases reported or confirmed in South Africa.

This was while the total number of cases in the current outbreak of Ebola in Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone had risen to 3 069 probable and confirmed cases.

About 2 300 have reportedly died this year since the outbreak of Ebola.
