Durban - The family of a 6-year-old girl who was raped and stabbed do not want charges pressed against the man alleged to have committed the crime, the Sunday Tribune reported.

According to the newspaper, neither the mother or grandmother want charges pressed against the grade one pupil's mentally unstable uncle because they would lose the R1200 monthly grant he receives.

The uncle, who is expected to appear in the Umbumbulu Magistrate's Court, is alleged to have stabbed the girl nine times.

The girl's mother is quoted as saying: "I don't want him to go to jail because he is going to get all kinds of diseases. We are siblings and he is sick."

The newspaper reported that the girl, who is being treated in Durban's Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital, was apparently also raped last year by her uncle, but police could not confirm this.
