No rhino hunting permit requests from Asia

Johannesburg - No rhino hunting permit requests have been received from Vietnam, Thailand or China since the government tightened hunting requirements in April, Beeld reported on Wednesday.

These Asian countries were allegedly the main consumers of rhino horn, the environmental affairs department told the newspaper in a statement.

The criteria for the issuing of permits were changed in April, to allow local authorities to determine whether applicants were bona fide hunters.

They also had to consider whether hunters' countries of origin had legislation in place to ensure hunted animals would be used as trophies.

The department reportedly recommended to all conservation authorities that hunting permits for white rhinos be refused to all Vietnamese citizens until Vietnamese authorities had confirmed in writing that rhino trophies exported to Vietnam since 2010 were still in the hunters' possession.

Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (Cites) management authorities in Vietnam had notified South African authorities that they were busy with that process.

Beeld reported that nearly 270 rhinos had been slaughtered in South Africa since the beginning of 2012.

As if a poacher will ever apply for a permit...

Do you really think they will go the legal way - i think not. It doesn't cost them as much to go the illegal way. Put out the word the you are willing to pay R200 (might be a little low) for rhino horn and bob's your uncle - you will have many applying for the job.

wtf !!! These guys don't need permits. There are locals who do the illegal hunting & pass the goods onto these guys for a paltry amount of money.

Good and they should not be either!!! Not that they care, they are paying other people to do it for them, the bastards!!! May their willies all fall off!!!

Did you hear the latest. All asian pubic hair is made of the same substance as rino horn

@ fussed. Ah, but will the world sit back and watch if owner of said pubic hair is shot, and their crotch hacked out with an axe while they lie bleeding on the ground? (apologies for being course, but it is pretty much an accurate description of what they do to our rhino.)

      fussed.anderson - 2012-07-04 11:51

Well we wont tell them then. Our secret and we can have a good old laugh at what is going on and the rest of the world will think they have gone homo

Every which way but the right way as usual. Get the SANDF out the barracks and into the field. Post the over weight cops onto bush patrols and get them active. Thermal imaging equipment, night vision equipment, patrols, long range observation posts, and perhaps we could borrow Mugabe's chopper gun ships for quick response. Dominate through presence all areas where Rhinos are located. Long term - incorporate such patrols into the training regime of our armed forces. What better training where the threat is real but very limited.

a thief doesn't come in through your front door, he uses subterfuge and deception. if it were up to me we'd drop a nuke of these f'ers. instead of killing our beloved rhino's to get a hard on, take some f'ing viagra you ignorant peasants.

This is government's feeble attempt to "assist in saving the rhino" which will NEVER be effective. The only way to solve this problem is to catch poachers and MAKE EXAMPLES out of them! Mutilate their faces and ensure they survive to tell the tale. Or better yet, hand the bastards over to the public and WE will make examples out of them!

  • bo.hiscox - 2012-07-04 11:38

Perhaps government should stop throwing lavish parties and stop buying the president fancy jets, and rather spend that vital money on positioning THOUSANDS of guards in the field to catch these inhumane F#*kers
