No special treatment for Skierlik shooter

Johannesburg - The man jailed for killing four people in Skierlik informal settlement in the North West was not receiving special treatment in prison, an official said on Tuesday.

"Johan Nel was transferred to a maximum correctional centre in Limpopo, No special treatment was given to Nel," said correctional services spokesperson Sarie Peens.

She was responding to an accusation by Cosatu North West that Nel was being given preferential treatment.

Nel is serving four life sentences for the 2008 murder of four black people in Skierlik informal settlement, near Swartruggens.

He shot dead Sivuyile Peyi, 37, Annah Moiphitlhi, 31, Elizabeth Moiphitlhi, 3-months-old, and Tshepo Motshelanoka, 10. He wounded eight others.

"We are told that the racial killer [Johan Nel] is being specially treated by the correctional services to the extent that he is visited by his wife almost every day, while the African black prisoners are visited at the times programmed by the management," Cosatu alleged.

Married in prison

Peens said Nel was initially held at the juvenile centre, where inmates had access to a library.

He was transferred to the Katuma Sinthumule maximum prison in Venda, Limpopo, soon after his marriage at the Rustenburg prison in February.

"He is no longer in the juvenile section," she said.

Peens confirmed that Nel got married while in prison.

"The fact that he got married inside a correctional facility was done according to the department of correctional services policy.

"The couple received guidance from a social worker from the department of correctional services before they got married, and several media published the story about his marriage."

She said the parents of the couple were given permission to attend the wedding ceremony inside the prison.

Gotta agree with Eric, whats the point of marrying someone you'll never get to spend time with. If he cared for her he'd refuse to marry her, she's giving up a part of her life for nothing.

Robert McBride - killed 3 and injured 69

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-08-01 07:25

Irrelevant. This guy was a kid who lost his mind due to circumstances, but what he did is still unforgiveable. He killed a baby and a 10 year old child, if he wanted to attack the black nation why not rather target bad people, like criminals. Mad and a coward, keep him out of society. His actions have probably caused the deaths of more than 4 of his "own" due to the hatred his murder has caused.

@ Henry Good for you that He loves you. But last i checked the incidence of HIV is on the rise in the white populance. Let us though pray you contunue to enjoy the Lord's favour and live a long life filled with your hatred. Methinks that is punishment enough suitable for you. Enjoy your hate filled day

I love the fact that we can openly call him a "racial killer" and every farm murderer is a suspect or a criminal... god forbid you call a black man who murdered a white person a "racial killer"

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-08-01 07:31

Sure, a farmer myself a lot of the crime against us is extremely violent and certainly that violence is racially motivated. (What else could it be?) But there is no doubt at all that this kid committed a racially motivated crime, so I don't think the farm murder thing is relevant here? What happened at Skierlik was very different, racial lunacy I'd say.

      chris.hadfield2 - 2012-08-01 08:38

I agree totally with his sentence, this kid's CRIME was abominimal - infact the death penalty would have been justified in this case, but I am simply pointing out that at no point were Terrablanches' killers labelled as "racial killers" or those animals who killed that family in Walkerville recently... to name a VERY SMALL FEW... most violent crime in this country is racially motivated - whether we choose to believe it or not. What really annoys me is the fact that violence against whites seems to be almost deemed "politically correct" and in many cases almost excusable - "shame he was mistreated, shame they didn't get paid, shame he was a minor, shame he is historically dissadvantaged, shame he was uneducated, shame they were unemployed... shame, shame, shame...". Where as any crime against a person of colour by a white person is deemed to be absolutely disgusting and the main steam media is allowed to print and use all sorts of rhetoric - 'racism, bigotry, previously advantaged... racial killer..." Just saying...

Among his victims was a 3 month old innocent baby! Let him rot in jail and add hard labor.

  • tricia.sutherland1 - 2012-08-01 08:46

the article says 'racial killing'. so when black people rape and kill white people, what is that called? this man may as well have been given a death sentence - we all know what will happen to him in prison, are prisoners given protection should there be an obvious threat against them, yes/no?

      gerald.nchabeleng - 2012-08-01 10:46

gee do sound sympathetic for him...and clearly concerned for his well being in jail...i just cant help but think about a ten month old baby...and how that child has been robbed of the right to life, to marry someday. hey...are you a mother by the way?
