No tents in streets, metro cops warn

2011-12-20 10:56

Johannesburg - People will not be allowed to erect tents on public roads for festive season parties, Johannesburg metro police said on Monday.

"The tents will be confiscated and people will be fined R1 000, as erecting of tents is a contravention of the road by-laws," spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

"To get back your tents you will pay a further fine of R2 000. We have already confiscated tents in Alexandra and Ivory Park."

Minnaar also said people going to municipal parks would not be allowed to take liquor in.

"We have already started patrolling parks. It is a contravention of the park by-laws to take liquor onto the premises."

sorry but who parties in the street?

      PyroSA - 2011-12-20 11:13

Some people just don't give a hoot.

If you have been to the townships often enough you would know that it verey common to erect a tent on your front yard covering some portion of the street due to mailny lack of space in the yard.Nothing wrong with that as mostly the neighbours and all the users are mostly made aware of it.Once again the authorities target the easy targets neglecting the serious issues affecting people everyday.

      Kala - 2011-12-20 12:46

Exactly Thabo. Why don't they chase after real criminals. Oh wait... Real criminals are to dangerous.

      Lerato - 2011-12-20 12:52

@Goyougoodthing clearly u have never been to a township party, funeral or function that requiers a tent! Its common practice in the townships because the yards are not big enough for tents and we even go to police station to get affvidt for this!!! i guess now its against the LAW!!!

Have you heard of a Street party?(under cover)HaHa!!

      George - 2011-12-20 14:47

You get muged in your own home, why would we want to party on the streets. Pavements are for the anc and there gutter parade and conections who can do as they please and get away with it. Watch how many parties there will be on the streets and see if the sap or metro do anything about them, beside party with them

      halicon76 - 2011-12-20 20:23

its all a ploy... to get you to drive home drunk... instead of sleeping it off in the park... :)

      goyougoodthing - 2011-12-20 11:28

There is another one on the train tracks outside Durban Station. Starts Now.

      Kala - 2011-12-20 12:48

A bring and braai at my off ramp tomorrow night (I have a land claim). Bring your own tent and a thousand bucks for the cops chistmas fund.

      dave.j.colquhoun - 2011-12-20 13:03

Hang on a second. I thought the N1 was a highway / freeway not a road so this is quite fine. OK then I'll be there. Just need to know what time I should be there and if there are any costume requirements. (I'll come dressed as a traffic cop so that I can collect the R1000.00 entrance fees.

People e'kasi won't like this law... Not at all. It's easy for people from the suburbs, but i don't think they understand how it works e'mzini.

  • Elle-Black - 2011-12-20 14:14

Actually I'm glad they are touching on this subject because it is really annoying. Some people go as far as erecting a tent in the middle of a main road
