'Normal for 2+ family members to be raped'

2012-11-06 11:15

Cape Town - It is not unusual for two or more members of the same family to be raped in South Africa, help centre Rape Crisis reportedly said.

"It probably happens more than you realise," director Kathleen Dey told the Cape Times.

She said that when daughters went for rape counselling, it often turned out that their mothers had also been raped at the same age.

The newspaper interviewed a family in which a mother and two of her three children were raped over a 14-year period in Philippi, Cape Town.

The mother was raped in 1999 while on her way home. In 2008, her family was sleeping when two men broke into her house and raped her daughter.

Last year, her son was raped, allegedly by his soccer coach.

Dey said fear and anxiety became predominant feelings in rape victims.

"You don't feel you have a choice. You're constantly looking for the next source of danger," she said.

According to the report, police statistics showed that 64 514 sexual offences were reported from last April to May this year.

Convicted rapists should be jailed permanently and they must all be castrated also!

      thefith.element.3 - 2012-11-06 11:23

Kobus, i fully agree, this is disgusting!!!!! No rapist can be reformed, they must have a special prison just for rapists, which feature some big burly men also sharing cells with them, that can do the same to them on a daily basis. I would have no problem shooting a ^&&%% like that. I am very angry.

      apansari2325 - 2012-11-06 11:29

This must be the african solution of african problems mentioned by respected ZUMA!!

      hermann.hanekom - 2012-11-06 11:30

Yes Kobus, rapists can't be reformed, they can only be recycled into society so I agree with you.

      Shaun - 2012-11-06 11:32

if you rape then your penis must be cut off,if you steal then your hand must be cut off,if you murder then you must be look i just made a perfect justice system.why do parliment not want harsh punishment for criminals?human rights prehaps, these people ARE NOT human.

      andre.vandeventer.16 - 2012-11-06 11:42

In the old SA rape was considered a Schedule 1 offence and if found guilty punishable by hanging. The result was that there were very few rapes that we heard of, also murders, for that fact. In the "new SA, rape seems to be a pleasurable pastime for the rapists. Bring back the gallows!

      eben.genis.9 - 2012-11-06 11:47

Jailed? please... Kill the fcker! tie him up and give the family weapons let them sort it out! People like this don't deserve life.. those victims never recover.. and I would gladly torture a person like that to death with a smile on my face...

      thando.gqabaza - 2012-11-06 11:53

Hanging a rapist is NOT murder

      zambezi.river - 2012-11-06 12:26

      Western Cape ....................again!

      jaco.bruwer.73 - 2012-11-06 13:26

What do U Expect in SA. Criminals have a joy ride and get more rights then your local South African. Rape some one, scent-ans is as follows. 10 YEARS JAILED - SHORTEN TO 1 YEAR DU TO OVER POPULATING OF JAILS IN THE 1 YEAR U RECEIVE FREE FOOD, ACCOMMODATION AND THE RIGHT TO VOTE. The scent-ans should be as follows. No rights to vote for 10 years, Castration and making it public who committed the rape and jailed for 5 years. That will lead to almost 0 rapes per year.

      kirsten.a.foster.100 - 2012-11-06 16:11

Deicide- and when your 5 year old takes a sweetie? You'll be ok with chopping his hand off? Stealing is very different to rape!!!!

  • lulama - 2012-11-06 11:20

    'Normal' yeah only in ZA.

      allstar.scotts - 2012-11-06 11:34

What an awsome statistic! So proud to be South African!

  • gert.swart.393 - 2012-11-06 11:24

Seems it stay in the families. Cut off and throw away!

  • Steven - 2012-11-06 11:25

That is the most sickening and disturbing statistic to come out yet. Why on earth are harsher punishments/sentences not handed out to offenders of this heinous crime? Protect the victims not the criminals.

      aarchaic - 2012-11-06 11:30

Bring back the Death penalty for Serious crimes like rape, murder...

      Steven - 2012-11-06 12:03

i really think there should be a publicly available register for all people convicted of rape. Name and shame them. Just like they do with child predators, they should do it with rapists. By far the most sickening crime in my opinion. Murder, at least you are dead, but rape, will stay with you and your family for ever.

      helga.venter.1 - 2012-11-06 13:19

Please don't imply that it is better to be dead than raped. You may as well say a person is worthless once they have been sexually violated. Think for a moment what you are really saying to rape survivors - that they would have been better off dead. Sorry, but all the rape survivors I know are quite glad to be alive. Rapists have as much power as we give them. If society says "you may have done this to a body, but you will not ruin a life" we give them much less power than when we tell them "you ruined a life to the point where death would have been preferable."

      Steven - 2012-11-06 13:48

Helga, that wasn't the point i was trying to make, I was trying to say that, in my opinion, rape is a far worse crime because of the psychological damage it causes to the victim.

      aarchaic - 2012-11-06 14:43

Helga no one said its better to be dead than raped, but the person doing the crime needs to be taken off the street so that no person would ever have to suffer under this piece of rubbish ever again!

  • mfanah.radebe - 2012-11-06 11:26

I real think an belive they must bring back the death sentence for Rapist and killz jail is not wrkng

  • larry.piggott1 - 2012-11-06 11:33

That is a shocking statistic and a damning indictment on South Africa. We should all be disgusted and ashamed.

  • beverly.young3 - 2012-11-06 11:34

Sadly this is so true. A Matron at the clinic was telling me that she was lecturing the 'sisters' about care, condoms and the perils of rape. Well, the tuned on her in flash, relating how rape was the norm for most of them when the go home late at night. That catching taxis has its own dangers. She was shocked. She learned similar from a school teacher, who related that 1 in 5 of the little girls experienced rape, on their home trips. We have a rape crisis centre here, and the stories are shocking!!! Doors being broken open at night, daughters taken out. I cant go on.

  • somikazi.pita - 2012-11-06 11:35

\64 514 sexual offences were reported from last April to May this year.\ It would be interesting to find out how many got convicted.

  • jacques.theron.3304 - 2012-11-06 11:35

These statistics leave a sour taste in my mouth

  • Andrea - 2012-11-06 11:36

Oh, this must be because being voilent toward women and children like this is a leftover sin from the apartheid days. I am informed that young males can only prove their masculinity in this atrocious fashion.

  • lulu.shezi - 2012-11-06 11:37

    dear Lord :(

  • somikazi.pita - 2012-11-06 11:40

It's usually the family member that does the rape and sadly sometimes the mother is aware.

  • Daniel Jayson Brink - 2012-11-06 11:56

Rapists who are caught and found guilty should have their sexual organs surgically removed, it is the only way that this will stop. It is the greatest depravity for a human being to take away the dignity of another person in this way. It is as bad if not worse than murder.

  • EndrewPetersen - 2012-11-06 11:58

I think Zuma knows, but he doesn't care. cause his building a Village for himself?? ...this is the leader of the Ruling Party the 'anc' -Sad

  • tony.naidoo - 2012-11-06 11:58

Multiple rapes, multiple murders, multiple hijackings, serial corruption - NORMAL ? Yep, only in South Africa! But, then again, we DO have a NORMAL government!!!

  • annette.matthyser - 2012-11-06 12:03

That many have been reported but how any have not i think that number times 3 maybe! But how can we solve this if our own president was accused of the same crime?

  • donovan.kalamdien.1 - 2012-11-06 12:03

What is the logical explanations for this reality. Why is it that two or more people from the same family gets raped more often than not???? I would really like to know what explains this. Perhaps through a clear understanding of why it occurs can one put measures inplace to prevent it, or atleast in part. I am sure that there is people out there that knows of rapist walking around without being prosecuted. I think they have a social responsibility to do something about it. And to parents who is aware of such occurences but prefer to hide it due to shame of what others might think should act. Show courage and support to the victim, it goes along way even if you dont percieve or see it. Rapist are brutal in their deed and I hope that the victims become even more brutal when faced with such adversity. In my opinion, cut of their balls!!!!! You get prostitutes that i'm sure asks less than R100. If you that desperate get yourself some cake legally!!!!

  • briana.scott - 2012-11-06 12:09

Normal? Really? Normal? that insinuates that it is okay. What the headline should read - Horrifically 2+ members of some family members are raped. What an absolute shocker - 'normal' should not be a word to even make it into such an article. 177 report their assaults each day, that is very scary considering less than 1/2 the assaults are even reported.

  • harley.mills.129 - 2012-11-06 12:12

    @deicide - because we'd have a c@ckless, handless government!

  • charmaine.mcdonald2 - 2012-11-06 12:12

It would be a blessing from God Almighty if the victims can find these rapist and beat them until they Rise Up Not Again. Our government refuses to implement the flogging of rapists publicly because they know who the rapists are in most cases. I agree with the comments below. They should be sent to special prisons and stay there until death comes upon them. I feel for the victims.

  • rouen.heiberg - 2012-11-06 12:18

The real problem is the rapist has more rights than the victim. Cut it off, problem solved.

  • rjledwaba - 2012-11-06 12:18

The rapists should have their balls cut

  • sicelo.brukwe.9 - 2012-11-06 12:22

  • rory.n.price - 2012-11-06 23:57

Poor Jayzee, wives would reject him if rapists were castrated, then again without his nuts he may have brains

  • markdare - 2012-11-07 08:46

This may be normal is some South African societies, but it definitely is not normal in my society and culture. But then again the moronic president of SA says that his people must do things the African way and not the white mans way. I can therefore deduce that Africans like having their children raped and their elders murdered?

  • shirley.sum.568 - 2012-12-03 01:14

since when did this become " normal" in S.A? Why is it not being dealt with and of highest importance? S.A is ridden with crime, and the offenders/criminals get away with it...why?..... because they can, as nothing is done to deter them. There is sadly no law and order in SA anymore, pity those that are not safe, if this is "normal"!!
