Johannesburg - A 29-year-old man was expected to appear in the Taung Magistrate's Court on Monday in connection with the murder of his toddler son, North West police said on Saturday.

Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said the incident took place on 24 December at around 22:00 in Maphoetsile village, Taung.

"It is alleged that the suspect locked himself and his son inside one of the back rooms at his grandmother's place.

According to the information, a few minutes later, one of the children went to knock on the door," he said.

"There was no response and family members were alerted... They peeped through the window and saw the boy hanging from the roof rafters. The boy's father apparently opened the door and ran away."

Mokgwabone said that the police were called to the scene and found the 5-year-old's body inside the room.

The father later returned to the house and handed himself over to the police on the scene.

The motive for the incident was unknown and investigations continue.
