Cape Town - A "one-sided" decision to change the name of the North West to Bokone Bophirima has been slammed by AfriForum.

The new name, which is the Tswana translation of North West, is listed on the provincial government’s official website and came as a "big shock to many in the country", the NGO said in a statement.

"This devious change is unacceptable," said North West AfriForum co-ordinator Marcus Pawson. "Place names cannot merely be changed overnight in accordance to political trends."

News24 in 2013 reported that the ANC was contemplating a name change for the province because North West was "just a direction".

At the time, a proposal was made to rename the province after Moses Kotane, who was the general secretary of the SA Communist Party from 1939 to 1978.

This suggestion was dismissed by opposition parties.

AfriForum, which has launched a campaign to have the previous name restored, argued the ANC has "no sense of responsible management in the province and that this step was taken in an attempt to compensate for the human rights violations as basic services cannot even be delivered properly".

"[We want] to know in terms of which legislation the name has been changed, as the South African Geographical Names Council does not have the jurisdiction to approve provincial name changes."

A provincial government spokesperson could not immediately be reached for comment.
