Mahikeng - The North West provincial government is set to establish its own traffic college to meet the demand for new traffic officers, it said on Friday.

"The use of colleges outside the province has proved to be expensive and resulted in fewer officers being trained, as the 13 colleges tend to give first preference to local recruits," premier Thandi Modise said.

The college was to be kick-started over the next three years and it was estimated it would cost R10m.

Provincial road traffic management authorities in partnership with the State and Security Sector Training Authority (SASSETA) was targeting recruitment and training of 400 trainees, Modise said.

The traffic officers diploma would offer courses, such as vehicle examination, driving licences examination, testing centre inspector, dangerous goods, weigh bridge management, and speed detection.

Refresher courses for the province's 505 traffic officers would also be available.

The college would be housed at the Batswana High School premises in Mafikeng.
