THE man charged with shooting Northdale man Pranesh Harilal (33) during a family dispute at the weekend was yesterday granted bail of R5 000.

Shanil Maharaj (28) appeared in court with bandages plastered over injuries on his forehead and neck. He also showed the court cuts on his hand and bruises on his arms.

His attorney, Terrence Chetty, told the court that Maharaj alleges he was injured by Harilal and members of his family, and “people on the scene”.

The court was told the state did not oppose Maharaj’s release on bail as he is not regarded as a flight risk.

It was alleged that Maharaj had been called to the scene to discuss “family issues”.

During the discussion a fight ensued, during which Maharaj was assaulted and Harilal was shot.

It was reported by police sources after the incident that seven shots were allegedly fired, killing Pranesh Harilal and wounding his father.

Maharaj is due to appear in court again on June 10
