Johannesburg - A man has been jailed for 24 years by the Northern Cape High Court for crimes including rape and manufacturing child pornography, provincial police said on Thursday.

Rudolph Coetzee, 23, was sentenced to 24 years in prison for five counts of rape, 10 years for 16 counts of sexual assault, eight years for two counts of attempted rape, and 10 years for manufacturing, spokesperson Lieutenant Olebogeng Tawana said in a statement.

The sentences would run concurrently.

The materials found in Coetzee's home involved local children aged between 3 and 12-years-old.

"Rudolph has been clinically diagnosed as being a paedophile; this means that he is sexually aroused by prepubescent children," Tawana said.

"Rudolph has been in custody since his arrest on May 22, 2014. During his arrest police confiscated various images and pornographic manufactured material depicting children... either naked or where he is engaging in sexual acts with them."

The material was discovered on Coetzee's personal computer during a raid and search of his home, which he used as his photographic studio.

The sentence, handed down on Wednesday, has been welcomed by Northern Cape police management.
