Durban - The man who fired the shots that killed a teacher and pupil in Nquthu will be sentenced in the High Court in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday.

Sibongiseni Mdakane, 32, was convicted on Monday of killing 47-year old Vusi Ntombela and 14-year old Elizabeth Nhleko.

Mdakane pleaded guilty to the killings, the wounding of a 12-year old pupil as well as possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Mdakane entered the classroom at Luvisi Primary on June 2 and shot Ntombela, who was also speaker in the local municipality.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said Mbhekiseni Khambule, who is alleged to have hired Mdakane to kill Ntombela for R15 000, would appear in the Nquthu Magistrate’s Court later on Tuesday.

The Witness newspaper reported that Mdakane had told Judge David Ntshangase that he had been hired to kill Ntombela. He said that two of the shots he had fired had missed Ntombela and struck the two pupils.

He told the court that after Ntombela had fallen, he had shot him again.
