Durban - A Durban trauma nurse watched as her mother-in-law was shot dead at her Cowies Hill home during a lovers' quarrel.

Elaine Lottering, 56, was shot once in the chest, allegedly by her boyfriend Wayne Gray, 49, at her Rockhaven Road home on Monday.

As Lottering lay on the floor, Gray paced the garden, allegedly with the loaded gun still in hand.

Kerry Pistorius told News24 she was at the house to support her mother-in-law.

“She had packed up all her stuff and told him to leave after they had an argument,” she said.

“I was sitting by the driveway and she came around the corner and asked us to press the panic button, and her niece did that. I got up and ran around the corner and as I got to her, Wayne was in the car and he put the gun out of the car and shot her,” Pistorius said.

Too late

Pistorius, a trauma nurse, rushed to Lottering’s aid.

“She dropped to the ground and he got out of the car and didn’t say anything and just walked away.

"I started working on Elaine and after about five minutes she started gasping and I started CPR. She looked like she was starting to breathe again and then the paramedics arrived, but she passed away soon after that,” she added.

Pistorius said that as Lottering clung to life, Gray paced the garden.

“He was walking around with his gun cocked and he refused to put it away. It was incredibly scary,” she said.

Gray was arrested and appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court on Wednesday. He would remain in custody until his next court appearance.
