Johannesburg - A police Nyala was set alight in a protest over municipal demarcation in Vuwani in Limpopo on Friday, police said.

Police spokesperson Colonel Ronel Otto said the road from Elim via Vumani to Malamulele was closed with burning tyres earlier in the day. Motorists were advised to avoid the area.

She said the Vuwani protest was related to the community's resistance to being incorporated in the Malamulele municipality.

Nobody was injured when the Nyala was torched.

Comment from the protesters was not immediately available.

In July, the SABC reported that Chief Mbhangiseni Masia said residents were ''vehemently opposed'' to the decision by the Municipal Demarcation Board.

In previous protests, schooling and business was severely disrupted.
