Cape Town - Minister of Higher Education and Training Blade Nzimande has landed himself in hot water with members of the portfolio committee who are fed up with his lack of attendance at oversight meetings.

According to the Sunday Independent, an ANC committee member, who asked not to be named, voiced his disapproval at the minister’s continued absence from meetings. Nzimande’s absence from last week’s meeting – the last this year – was the final straw.

Of particular concern was the issue around two new universities due to open their doors next year. Nqaba Bhanga, a Cope member of the committee, said Nzimande’s absence was common and that in two years he could not recall the minister of having been present at any meeting.

Nzimande’s absence from key meetings has fallen under the spotlight before. Last year he failed to attend a critical meeting at the Central University of Technology in Bloemfontein. He had placed the university under administration. The council were opposed to this move. Instead of attending the meeting, Nzimande chose to march on the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg in protest against the controversial painting of President Jacob Zuma entitled The Spear.
