Obese SA man too fat for New Zealand

2013-07-27 07:35

Wellington - An obese South African man has been told he is too fat to live in New Zealand despite shedding 30kg since he moved to the country six years ago, a report said on Saturday.

Albert Buitenhuis - who now weighs 130kg - and his wife, Marthie, said they face deportation after an application to renew their work visas was rejected because of his weight.

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) cited the demands his obesity could place on New Zealand health services and said their medical assessors deemed Albert no longer "had an acceptable standard of health".

The couple said they moved from SA to the main South Island city of Christchurch six years ago when Albert weighed 160kg and their annual work visas were renewed without any problem.

"We applied for year after year and there were no issues. They never mentioned Albert's weight or his health once and he was a lot heavier then," Marthie said.

"The irony is that at the moment he weighs less than when we first arrived in New Zealand and also less than in his first medical, which was accepted by INZ."

An INZ spokesperson said Buitenhuis was rejected because his obesity put him at "significant risk" of complications including diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and obstructive sleep apnoea.

"It is important that all migrants have an acceptable standard of health to minimise costs and demands on New Zealand's health services," he said.

A recent OECD report listed New Zealand as the third most obese developed nation behind the US and Mexico.

Let him reap benefits of his decision to leave the country - Gatvoli!

      Emily-Jane Elson - 2013-07-27 11:22

Azande.. Then move back to a rural area and live how you want to and as you say then you'll have no issues, no diseases etc.. Easy as that. Your comment WAS very racist and its because of people like you this country will never get better. I was born here, I'm African too, a white African at that. You don't sound as if you have any "Ubuntu" in you.. Practice what you preach

      Warren Tickner - 2013-07-27 16:59

Azande & Tumelo - try go making your racist comments in Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, Libya etc and see how long you would last...

      Earthquake risk too high.?

      Louis Ferreira - 2013-07-27 22:27

Re all the negative comments. Do your homework first and you might understand the reason behind the NZ decision.

  • Ronald Lukabwe - 2013-07-27 07:48

Plse check yr weight and shed off some fat !

  • Philip Condor - 2013-07-27 07:49

Is obesity a crime in NZ?

      Malcolm MacLeod - 2013-07-27 09:13

It is simple maths Philip, if he has a heart attack while he is there then the NZ healthcare system must pay for it, so they must calculate the potential cost of that vs the value he is potentially adding to the country by being present. It is harsh but just business, why would a country want to take somebody that is only going to cost them money? This is standard work visa/immigration visa procedure for pretty much any country that has a state health care system and not something specific to NZ, whoever decided to write this article is making a big thing out of nothing and clearly has an agenda - e.g. to make immigration look less attractive perhaps...

  • Petro Jahnel - 2013-07-27 07:50

@Petro-unfoturnately he's not a scrum player, they've used his skills for the past 6 years now someone more fitter and thinner is looking for his €job, they're afraid if he's laid off from his current job and the fatty has a heart attack he'll be a burden to the country's health care sytem, come back home the fat one

      Jacqui Daane Van Rensburg - 2013-07-27 16:42

Jacqui said, sorry that had to read curse.

      Tumelo Motloung - 2013-07-27 09:39

they'll transport you through the cargo ship. You'll be coming back to South Africa with containers carrying second grade meat,.After gaining extra weight what if you've to book those airlines that charges their fares in proportion to your weight, thats extra cost to your pocket now not to the New Zealandres

      Jacqui Daane Van Rensburg - 2013-07-27 16:47

Katleho Seahlodi. What a good idea.

      Mondli Botha - 2013-07-28 12:40

Katleho I am sure u were brought up by normal parents. What to their teachings about ubuntu?

  • Tholakele Mngadi - 2013-07-27 07:53

I pray when they deport you, you don't book this passenger airliner that makes people pay fares in proportion to their weight. You might not afford a return ticket at that weight. I think Those New Zealanders are trying to shed (excuse the punk) excess South Africans from their country.

  • Sthembiso Jali - 2013-07-27 08:07

To think that people were recently blaming Naledi Pandor for chasing foreigners back home, it's about time South Africans remains home and foreigners takes a hike. Some of these immigration laws across the board are just simple ridiculous.

Why would one want to live in a country that casts the weak aside anyway. Every country on the world would have a great economy if it ejected its sick, poor, unemployed people. However the rest of the world is inhabited by human beings.

      Del Pearson - 2013-07-28 17:05

Be realistic. He only has a work permit and has been lucky enough to have it renewed at least 5 times having been there for 6 years. He obviously has no intension of becoming a citizen of NZ, but he is getting all the benefits, so why should they keep him if he is a risk to their country.

  • Booska Ponsnou - 2013-07-27 14:06

It amazes me how a simple article about a south african man deemed too fat to live in another country can change into a race issue. Everybody should hang their heads in shame. What does it matter what the colour of his skin is? Most of you are missing the point!

      Booska Ponsnou - 2013-07-27 14:31

CHEMOTHERAPY SUCCESS WITH ALOE VERA! This is a must read Internet article for all those diagnosed with cancer or who have a loved one who is. Just google the title to access the article. Numerous scientific studies at universities and colleges have shown that the Aloe vera plant contains a myriad of nutrients to help prevent and heal various diseases (including cancer and diseases that result from obesity). When taking aloe vera during chemotherapy, healthy cells are able to utilize the ingredients in aloe vera for protection against the debilitating effects of chemo, which results in the chemo destroying mainly the cancer cells while leaving the healthy cells alone.
