Occupy Oakland rallies for Marikana miners

2012-08-25 20:13

Cape Town - About 100 Occupy Oakland members rallied in support of the Lonmin Marikana miners who were shot dead during an illegal strike, Digital Journal reported on Saturday.

The group gathered on Friday in Oscar Grant Plaza in Oakland, California, carrying placards and handing out pamphlets about the shooting in the North West province in South Africa.

Some of the banners read: "This is post-apartheid?", "Expropriate without compensation South African Industries and Banks" and "Workers' lives are worth more than platinum."

Thirty-four striking workers were shot dead and 78 were wounded last Thursday when police tried to disperse a group of protesting miners who had gathered on a hill near the mine.

In the preceding week, 10 people, including two police officers and two security guards, were killed in violent protests at the Lonmin platinum mine in Marikana.

Must be very bored. Longing for the 80s...

      hleriche - 2012-08-26 10:30

I would have supported Oakland was it not for the fact their whole agenda is racist, biased, hypocritical and politically driven. If they showed fairness without double standards, they might actually get members.

  • boltonbarry - 2012-08-25 20:23

      isabel.w.stokes - 2012-08-25 20:38

And the thousands of victims of crime? And drunk driving? And the health system? And theeducation system? And our corrupt government? And, and, and...

      veldt66 - 2012-08-25 21:37

Farmers are not the only people dying from crime!!!

      flower.fourie - 2012-08-26 08:58

Yes farmers are not the only people dying from crime but they are the people that grow our food, without which we cannot live.

      Sharon Gien-Cambier - 2012-08-26 09:20

guys blame the overseas news reporters...they so blatantly lied. they showed it as unarmed workers peacefully marching when police opened fire. The only ones that got it right was aljazera, and euronews. BBC u are indeed good at spewing rubbish....guess thats what sells your newspapers.

  • hermann.hanekom - 2012-08-25 20:32

Poor bored blind Yankees - I guess for citizens of a country that is governed by litigation the death of two policemen and eight others are normal, because the dead are representative of law and order.

      isabel.w.stokes - 2012-08-25 20:39

Law and order is a foreign concept here.

      squeegee.pilot - 2012-08-25 20:48

Only 100 out of 300 mil. That's like half a protester doing the toi- ...

"Thirty-four striking workers were shot dead and 78 were wounded last Thursday when police tried to disperse a group of protesting miners who had gathered on a hill near the mine." INCORRECT! It should read...."Thirty-four striking workers were shot dead and 78 were wounded last Thursday when police shot at a group of 3000 protesting miners AFTER they were fired upon by one or more of the striking miners as they moved past the police held position." Get it right or don't bother reporting it.

      Tilt777 - 2012-08-25 20:49

      Spot on Kelvin

      philip.harris.967 - 2012-08-26 01:11

Kelvin , if the police were not trying to disperse the strikers ....what were 400 heavily armed police doing in the middle of the veldt?

    Middleclass hippies nogal.

  • duncan.gill1 - 2012-08-25 22:12

once again we have interfering Yanks who stick their noses in to our business and shout from their lofty moral position what we should do..its high time this defunct nation lose its world power status, then maybe the real people among them will stand up and make America great again!

      philip.harris.967 - 2012-08-26 01:14

I think someoene needs to tell us what to do Dunkie ...hundreds of thousands of our best people have emigrated ..our country is the most inequal and crime ridden in the world. Quite obviously we are incapable of doing it ourselves.

      lacrimose.wolf - 2012-08-26 01:27

@phillip.harris.967 - and that is the point of all the strife. We're rapidly reaching the point where we'll accept *anyone* who seems to have viable solutions. Therein lies the danger. For we're so eager for respite, we could leap from the frying pan into the fire.

      duncan.gill1 - 2012-08-26 09:53 happy someone pointed this out at last..thanks!

      duncan.gill1 - 2012-08-26 10:57

philip.harris.967 The truth of the matter is that no one can tell you what to do we need quite frankly,to find our own solution this is why I hate when other people from other countries interfere in our cant even tell your neighbor how to cut his grass..!you get my meaning/so stop thinking other people can help us we can only help ourselves..this is why we have forums like this,to sound off and let off steam and find some solace in sharing our views!

  • flysouth - 2012-08-26 07:21

These morons do not know what they are protesting about. Why do they not protest every day about the 98 truly innocent people killed daily in crime in SA?

  • Dylan Dillboy Allison - 2012-08-26 07:24

would like to ask Occupy Oakland if they would be able to beef up their numbers and maybe make a stand against the keeping the masses stupid policy in South Africa (refer to Limpompo farce)... And make a stand against polygamist presidents who cost taxpayers millions in keeping his circus in town and trying to do so for as long as he can... Your days are numbered machine gun singing shower king! When will this country get someone in who isn't a buffoon and actually makes things happens!

  • angela.michaels.73 - 2012-08-26 08:28

Whilst in NYC , cops shoot ans wound 9 bystanders trying to take down one gunman on a shooting spree. Log in your eye Occupy Oakland!

  • staal.vanderbergh - 2012-08-26 08:40

Dear People from Oakland, California. Piss off and mind your own business. Why don't you rather pay attention to all the crazy gun men in your own country. The Lonmin Shooting was very unfortunate and a sad reflection on the frustrations of the miners, but they were aggressive and the police were left with no option.

      jpstrauss - 2012-08-26 13:44

You should really go find out what the average inhabitant of Oakland looks like. It makes so much more sense when you know. Whitey is a minority.

  • Stephen - 2012-08-26 09:31

Tell these people to clean up their own back yards before they start pointing their brooms elsewhere. I was living in Los Angeles in the 80's when the students decided it was time to protest against Apartheid, but none of them had any idea that South Africa has a whole different dynamic to the way America is run. Maybe if they hadn't stuck their noses in back then this country would not be in the mess its in today. Just sayin.....

  • diana.gill.18 - 2012-08-26 10:01

Yankee doodles already tried to "help South Africa" around 20 yrs ago which did absolutely no good to the country (like wherever they wanna stick in their long sniffy noses). We honestly can say that a part of the blame for what had happened at Marikana lies upon american shoulders as well.
