Johannesburg - A 24-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing an off-duty police officer on Monday in Winterveld, Mabopane, Gauteng police said.

Police spokesperson Kabelo Marumo said the man was arrested in Soshanguve where he was hiding after he shot the 32-year-old police constable several times in the upper body on Monday morning.

The officer died shortly after he was taken to the hospital.

"A firearm with no serial number, suspected to be the type used by police members, was recovered during the arrest," Marumo said.

The man was expected to appear in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate's Court on Tuesday facing charges of murder and possession of unlicensed firearm.

Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant General Joel Lesetja Mothiba said an attack on police officers was something that should not be taken lightly.

"Any attack and the killing of our police officers will not be tolerated. We will ensure that we apprehend these cold-blooded killers and ensure that they face the full might of the law," Mothiba said.

"No stone will be left unturned in our efforts to serve justice to the deceased's family, friends and colleagues."
