Durban - An off-duty police officer shot and wounded a man who allegedly attacked him with a screwdriver, after intervening in a mugging on Wednesday.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said that the incident took place in Besters near KwaMashu, Durban.

“A woman, 28, was waiting for her transport between Nyala Road and Ntuzuma Access Road when she was accosted by three men. They threatened her with a firearm and robbed her of her belongings before fleeing on foot,” he said.

“The victim screamed for help and an off-duty police officer who heard her screams, came to her rescue. Two of the men continued to flee.

“However one man attacked the police officer with a screwdriver when he was confronted. After he refused to comply with the police officer's instructions to stop the attack, the officer fired a shot towards him, wounding the man in the leg,” Naicker added.

The injured man remains under police guard in a Durban hospital and will be charged with armed robbery.

He will appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrate's Court as soon as he is discharged. “Police are on the trail of the two outstanding suspects,” Naicker said.
