Cape Town - Offers to adopt the dog dubbed "Underdog" after she fell into Kimberley's Big Hole and was rescued in a daring operation, are streaming in says the city's SPCA.

"Underdog", who was in the Big Hole for more than a week, is being treated for her ordeal at the local SPCA.

She is on a drip and a local vet is keeping an eye on her.

The SPCA inspectors who were on site when "Underdog" was brought to the surface, say they have received over 100 applications to adopt the dog, with some applications coming from as far as Canada.

They say they will screen all applications and will choose the best possible home for the dog.

The first attempt to rescue Underdog the dog was unsuccessful, as the helicopter rescue team deemed the mission too dangerous. Kurt Darren and his wife offered to pay the expenses for the helicopter, according to the SPCA.

A ground rescue team was then assembled and lowered down into the hole to rescue the dog. Rigs were erected to help stabilise the descent into the hole, according to ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson.

The dog was extremely nervous when they got down into the hole, so they fed her a sedative hidden in food to calm her down before bringing her back up.

The rescue team consisted of Warrant Officer John Seeley of the SAPS Search & Rescue Unit and the ER24 Team.

On Friday, ER24's Christo Venter said the dog had been in the hole for a couple of days.

"The dog had been swimming around in an attempt to find a way out and fortunately found a ledge to rest at, which probably saved him - who turned out to be a her - thus far," he said.
