School evacuated as office building catches fire

Cape Town - An office building in Newlands caught fire on Thursday morning, as Cape Town firefighters continue to monitor unrelated wildfires which have devastated parts of the South Peninsula in recent days.

City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Theo Layne confirmed to News24 on Thursday morning that the top floor of the Great Westerford building in Main Road, Newlands, was on fire.

"Three fire engines were dispatched and have just arrived at the scene," he said.

So far no injuries have been reported.The building was evacuated.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, Layne said.

Westerford High School, next door to the building, has also been evacuated, according to a student.

Meanwhile, Layne said the South Peninsula fires are presently under control. Firefighters are monitoring and maintaining hotspot areas, which include Clovelly, Monkey Valley in Noordhoek and Eagle's Nest in Constantia.
