Johannesburg - The M1 south highway was closed on Tuesday morning due to an oil spill, Johannesburg metro police said.

"There is oil on the road surface on the M1 south between Booysens off-ramp and the Crown interchange," said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

"The highway has been completely closed because of the thick layer of oil on the road surface."

He said traffic was already highly backed up and motorists would have to use Main Reef Road and the M2 east as alternative routes.

Clean-up crews were dealing with the matter.

The spill took place around 09:30, said Minnaar.
