Merc crashes through fence, onto Uno

2012-11-16 09:25

Cape Town - Stellenbosch residents couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw a white Mercedes-Benz shoot forward in a parking area, smashing through a palisade fence and landing on top of a Fiat Uno.

Eyewitnesses told Die Burger that the elderly driver of the Merc had accidentally stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake pedal.

The car smashed through the fence of the H B Thom theatre and landed on top of the Uno, also damaging a Honda standing close by.

A Stellenbosch University spokesperson said no one had been injured.

The matter had been reported to the police.

  • brasteve.myaluze - 2012-11-16 10:00

Would the driver perhaps be Judge Motata?

  • linda.duits - 2012-11-16 10:01

Sorry to say but some old people shouldn't be allowed to drive, they should be retested, they're a danger on the roads.

      mark.singh.9889 - 2012-11-16 10:09

Agree 100%. They dont really mean to be reckless but they are just too dangerous to be on the road

      siphom.mnguni - 2012-11-16 10:22

They should not be allowed to drive at all. They should be at the old age reminiscing about the old times when a pound could buy you a car.

      jbayloafer - 2012-11-16 10:57

Have a look at any stats you choose to, if you can read,18 to 35 year old males make the top of every list when it comes to traffic accidents. They probably also top the list for stupidist comments on social networks !

  • lablue.phoenix - 2012-11-16 10:09

  • pat.ketley - 2012-11-16 10:24

How many years has she been driving to not know the difference between an accelerator and a brake pedal?

  • mbonyathi - 2012-11-16 10:29

wasnt there a similar incident involving a merc that hit a BMW then nose dived into the freeway earlier this yr..m thinking maybe its s Mecr problem.

      JNaMolefe - 2012-11-16 10:39

exactly, I dont trust Merc because they experiences some problems with Merc cars. I will never buy that damn car. Hopefully they will get their car replaced for free!

      DarrenCooper68 - 2012-11-16 11:01

Ja JNaMolefe, it be the cars fault. The minister and the entire department of transport have some answering to do as well as the manufacturers of the fence, the tyres, even the person that designed the parking area. The car guard also needs to be invesigated in the commision of enquiry. Some people really do need lessons on how to apportion and accept blame. Ditto for the concepts of responsibility and accountability

If you want to drive uno go live in brakpan man

  • ian.huntly - 2012-11-16 10:38

The most valuable car there is in fact the Uno. It is one of the now rare Uno Turbo's, these days a highly collectible item. Is this time for another unintended acceleration law suit, this time against Merc iso Audi?

      norman.depluhm - 2012-11-16 10:46

Agreed bru, and it looks like it was in mint nick too... Such a shame.

  • theMichaelHawthorne - 2012-11-16 10:39

  • rocky.bell.927 - 2012-11-16 11:00

An elderly man was stopped by the police around 2 a.m and was asked where he was going at that time of night. The man replied, "I'm on my way to a lecture about alcohol abuse and the effects it has on the human body, as well as smoking and staying out late." The officer then asked, "Really? Who's giving that lecture at this time of night?" The man replied, "That would be my wife."

  • godesha - 2012-11-16 11:04

Oh dear! Or shall I say "Old dear"?

  • sello.molekwa.1 - 2012-11-16 11:24

Perhaps we should be only allowed to drive up to a certain age. If you mistake a brake for an accelerator you can do vice versa and slam the brakes in the middle of a freeway with speeding traffic behind you.

  • jackie.m.dickson - 2012-11-16 11:26

Isnt this an old story from a few months ago???

      rocky.bell.927 - 2012-11-16 12:31

That was another incident as I recall it, but very similar!

  • luvo.luvos - 2012-11-16 11:35

Was it Judge Nkola Motata driving again?? The honourable judge doesn't like to see fences and gates standing, he prefers them down.

  • arnie.vosloo.1 - 2012-11-16 13:15

But this happened like a week ago?

  • scott.young.737 - 2012-11-16 18:01

That's why old people shouldn't drive! Hand over that licence old girl.

  • Lisa Lazarus - 2012-11-16 23:02

Nowhere in the article does it state the gender of the driver of the Merc. Why the assumption then that the driver was a female. Also these days elderly applies to anyone over 50 or so, so to blame the age is wrong & the bottom line is that accidents happen.
